West allowed the two runs in the first inning, and after that, only three runners got on base. He struck out eight and issued just one walk.
“He looked good,” first-year Whitko coach Mark Fisher said of West. “Whenever he pitches, he keeps us in the game. He doesn’t usually walk anybody, thats why he’s our No. 1.”
The host Trojans got on the board early and looked to have the momentum. After a failed bunt attempt by junior Delano Shumpert, senior Lucas Newman ripped a single. West walked senior Max Slusser to put two runners on and they moved over on a passed ball.
Junior Ryan Kaufman grounded out to second base, but was able to score Newman and take the lead. Senior Keygan Mosier drove in Slusser in the next at-bat to push the lead to 2-0, and that’s where it stayed over the next three innings.
Triton’s Kaufman was the starting pitcher and looked good through the first three innings. He allowed two hits over those three frames, but was able to get a double play to end the second inning on a base running error and a dropped third strike.
Kaufman lasted one time through Whitko’s lineup, then the wheels started to come off. The Wildcats had four straight runners reach base in the top of the third on three singles and a walk. Whitko was able to score twice in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
“We always preach that after they score, we want to answer back,” Fisher said. “It felt good to score a bunch of runs. We’ve been on the losing end of a couple of those games this year.”
Whitko went on to score runs in the next four innings and tallied 12 runs in the top of the seventh. The Wildcats nearly batted around twice in the inning. They had eight hits and five walks in the frame.
Triton used three pitchers to try and stop the Whitko offense in the seventh.
“We’re out of pitching,” said Triton coach Tyler Hensley. “We have too many games lined up in a row and that throws everything off.”
At times, the Trojans looked sluggish and like they weren’t giving their full effort, no matter what the score was.
“We have to work harder in practice,” Hensley said. “We don’t have enough kids that work hard in practice and that’s our downfall.”
At the plate, West had four hits and a walk for the Wildcats. Juniors Spencer Sroufe and Nathan Smith, and freshman Evan Wilson all tallied three hits.
Mosier had two hits for the Trojans, including a double.
Whitko hosts North Miami tonight in a Three Rivers Conference showdown. Triton visits North Judson on Thursday for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference contest.
