The Warsaw Lady Tiger tennis team finished the regular season and concluded Northern Lakes Conference play with a 5-0 win over Goshen Monday.

The Lady Tigers accomplished their goal of a perfect record in regular season NLC?action and improved to 11-3 overall along the way.

Of the seven conference matches, the Lady Tigers won four of them 5-0, and had a final result of 4-1 in one other match in their impressive season.

“It was the seniors’ goal to go unbeaten in the conference this year,” said Warsaw coach Rich Orban. “The team rallied around their goal and played extremely well.”

Orban and the team knows how difficult it is to go 7-0 in the NLC. They attribute having a lot of focus and determination in accomplishing the goal.

Before the match started, four seniors were celebrated for their hard work over the last four years. Libby Jenkins, Ella Knight, Liza Lewis and Sophie Olson have been a part of three straight sectional championships for Warsaw and look to add another to the program’s long list of accomplishments.

“They’ve been incredible,” Orban said. “They focus on what’s good for the team, not what’s good for themselves.”

Four-year varsity player Lewis was the only singles player for Warsaw to lose a game against the Lady RedHawks. At No. 1 singles, Lewis jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first set, before allowing Goshen’s Anna Podgorski to steal a game and cut the lead in half. Lewis bounced back and won 10 straight games to claim a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Knight and Alyssa Zellers won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to secure the Lady Tigers’ win and undefeated conference season.

The doubles teams for Warsaw had to come back and win after being down early in both their matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Taylor Shoaf and Rachel Boyle were down 3-2 in the first set. The pair won two straight games to go up 4-3, but allowed Goshen to even things up at 4-4. Warsaw went on a quick tear and went on to win the first set 6-4.

Coming off the short break, the pair saw themselves down 1-0 and then 2-1, before rallying back and taking a 4-2 lead. When things were all said and done, the duo won 6-3.

Raegan Merchant and Rachel Yeager had a lot of back-and-forth in their match at No. 2 doubles. They were down 3-2 early in the first set, but were able to tie things up at 4-4 and won two quick games for a 6-4 win. In the second set, the pair took an early 1-0 lead and kept the momentum. Warsaw won the set 6-2 and sealed the 5-0 victory in straight sets.

The Lady Tigers are now gearing up for the NLC Championships that begin on Wednesday at Plymouth.

“If the girls focus, they will be fine,” Orban said.

He believes that going 7-0 in the regular season is tougher than playing in the conference tournament.
