Goodwill Industries Offering Training Events Throughout May

• Doughnuts & Dialogue, 10 a.m. to noon Monday.
Kick off Goodwill’s International Celebration Week by stopping in and grabbing a free cup of coffee, a Rise N’ Roll doughnut, and discuss anything career-related with the staff. Participants can be guided in the right direction toward a possible career path, part-time side work, volunteer opportunities, or get motivation to take the next step in life. The session is a safe, judgement-free space to talk, discuss career needs, and explore life and career options.
• Job Fair, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday
Participating companies in the fair include: Flexaust, Staffmark (hiring for Medtronic, LSC Communications and more), Home Helpers, Beacon Health Systems, Sonoco (manufacturer/packager in Akron, Caresource, Collier’s Heating and Cooling, Seasons Home Care, Nurses Etc., Early Childhood Alliance, KGP Co and Kitchens to Go, among others. All the companies will be screening and interviewing on the spot, so bring a resumé, dress professionally, and be prepared to leave with potential job offers.
• Clerical/Administrative Skills Workshop, 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday
Clients will learn the tools needed to work in an office setting with this workshop. Topics covered include computer skills, how to enter data into a spreadsheet, write a business e-mail, schedule on calendars, and create a marketing flyer for an event or promotion.
Clients wil also make a short PowerPoint presentation and cover topics such as operating a general multifaceted office printer to send a fax and make copies.
• Open Practice Interviews 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays through May 23.
The Goodwill Career Center will host open mock interviews for anyone who would like to practice their interview skills. Clients who are nervous about having an interview, or struggling to land a job because of the interview process, these mock sessions will prepare you for the types of questions (from basic to personal) that could be asked.
There will be discussions on how to answer the difficult questions, and what to avoid. Clients will learn how to appear confident and highlight skills in the conversation.
Another topic will be how personal appearance makes a great first impression in an interview. An appointment is suggested, and participants will receive a 25 percent discount to the Goodwill Retail Store.
• Computer Skills Assessment, 11 a.m. to noon Thursday.
• Basic Excel Assessment, 1 to 2 p.m. Friday.
Clients who want to see how far their computer knowledge can go can find out strengths and areas that can be worked on, and build from there. Clients will also receive an assessment breakdown. After the assessment, a one-on-one plan will be designed to tackle where you want to go next with digital skills.
• Leadership Skills in Business (With Certificate), 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
The Goodwill Career Center will assist clients with this free online course through Alison, a website designed to empower people with training courses from the world’s leading experts.
Successful businesses need more than good ideas, they need good leaders. This course reviews the essential leadership skills that entrepreneurs and business minded people need. Learn to organize a company, select and manage a business team, behave as a business professional and more. Learning all of this will prepare clients for success and provide them with the knowledge to go out and lead.
Allow at least two hours for this course, as the recommended time to complete and earn the certificate is between 2 to 3 hours.
• Veterans Employment Services, 10 a.m. to noon May 16.
Daniel Reed from WorkOne will be at the Goodwill Career Center to provide information to veterans on services in the local area. He will offer one-on-one employment help, employer resources, information on benefits and contacts for further services.
• Basic Excel Introduction, 11 a.m. to noon May 22.
This event will be hands-on and guided with several tutorials on Excel’s basic functions and tools. The class will cater to both those seeking introductory Excel knowledge, as well as those who want to further their Excel abilities.
We will cover Excel essential tools, and then work our way up to formatting and designing a standard spreadsheet with information.
• Job Search Online Workshop, 11 a.m. to noon May 24.
Struggling with navigating the internet searching for a job and/or applying online? The Career Center can help job seekers search for open positions and get assistance with online applications.
We’ll navigate multiple job search sites, and ensure information, attachments, resume and cover letters are entered correctly. We’ll also assist with what info to include, wording, and highlighting key words and skills to make sure you stand out in the application filtration systems companies may use.
