Warsaw Golfers Win Joe Harris Shootout

May 2, 2018 at 4:31 p.m.

NorthWood’s Caleb Lung won the battle, but the Warsaw Tigers won the war.

In conditions that were nearly perfect, outside of some wind, Lung fired a 73 Tuesday evening at Rozella Ford Golf Club to claim medalist honors in the eight-team Joe Harris Shootout.

Warsaw, led by Luke Delp’s 75, carded a four-man score of 320 and beat runner-up Fort Wayne Canterbury by 10 strokes to capture the team championship.

“We shot five strokes better than we did Saturday, and today, even though it was sunny and warm, the winds were up and the greens were hard,” said Warsaw coach Rich Haddad. “For our guys to ... nothing spectacular, but a really solid 320, knowing that it was going to be a hard day, I’m really proud of the guys. All of them played all 18 holes really hard.

“To see Luke Delp bounce back from a not himself round on Saturday, and to be runner-up to a great player from NorthWood, I was really happy for him.”

To go with Delp’s 75, Warsaw got a 79 from Sam Yeager, while Tommy Meier shot 80 and Jacob LaLonde carded an 86. Chase Byron rounded out the Tigers’ varsity lineup with an 87.

“Sam and Luke have shown themselves to be true 1 and 2 for us at this point, and I would expect that the rest of the year,” said Haddad.

“We’ve had some really good competition with them against each other. They’ve both played No. 1. They not only push each other, but they support each other, and I like dynamic of what we have there. They’ll have to shoot well for us to advance pretty far (in the state tournament). To see them both post in the 70s today feels great. Both had disappointing Saturdays, but came back and shot solid rounds today.”

Warsaw’s junior varsity team competed in the eight-team event and tied Rochester for seventh place with a 372.

Tucker Carlile paced the Tigers’ second team with an 84, followed in the lineup by Zach LaLonde (93), Brian Elliott (94), Noah Pequignot (101) and Mason Whitaker (120).

Culver Academies finished third in the team standings with a 333, followed by Triton (338), NorthWood (341), Plymouth (354), Rochester (372) and the Warsaw JV (372).

Isaac Wall led Triton with an 82, while Beau Hepler shot an 84 for the Trojans, Ross Johnson and Brock Watkins carded 86s and Chase Butler turned in an 88.

Not only was Haddad pleased to see his team win by 10 strokes, but certainly happy who the Tigers performed well against.

Canterbury is a potential regional opponent, while the rest of the field was filled with Northern Lakes Conference schools and teams that Warsaw will face in the sectional.

The Tigers host the NLC Championships at Stonehenge on May 19, the sectional at Rozella Ford on June 1, and the regional at Stonehenge on June 7.

“We’ve got some conference teams here, we’ve got some sectional teams here, and some regional teams, that we know we’ll have to face once the state tournament starts,” said Haddad.

“We saw those teams today, and we can beat those teams. This will be a confidence boost, not only individually, but as a team. We can be good enough to advance (in the state tournament) pretty far.”

The Warsaw varsity team plays in the Brownsburg Invitational Saturday, while the JV team hosts the Warsaw JV Invitational at Rozella Ford.

Triton plays in the LaVille Invitational Saturday at Plymouth Country Club.
