Glee Smith, a seven-year resident of Claypool, passed on April 28, 2018, at Mason Health & Rehabilitation Center.  She was 97.

Glee was born Sept. 7, 1920, to Sherman E. and Ida Mohler Butler in Rifle, Colo. She graduated from high school in Wauneta, Neb., and from Concord College in Athens, W.Va., with a Bachelor of Science. For a brief period, she was in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).

On Sept. 15, 1945, Glee was married to Clyde William Smith. Together they shared 53 years, and to their union three children were born: William Eugene, Carol Elaine and Clyde Robert Smith.

Glee was a retired elementary teacher, having taught for seven years in the rural schools of Nebraska and 24 years in West Virginia. She was a Christian who had served her church as the assistant pianist and a choir member for many years.

She was blessed with a loving family and church family, with good friends, and with kind neighbors.

In addition to her husband, Clyde, Glee was preceded in death by her oldest son, William Smith; sister, Dorothy Holderman; three brothers: Irvin, Jay and Ivan Butler; half brother, Leonard Bird; half sister, Carmen Merrill; step-father, Warren Bird; granddaughter, Jennifer Smith; and grandson, John Droke.

Those who survive include son Clyde Robert Smith, Bradley, W.Va.; daughter Carol Elaine (husband Roy) Droke, Claypool; five grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Local arrangements were trusted to Titus Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, W.Va., with visitation one hour prior.
