Do you remember the name Chesley Sullenberger? No? How about Captain "Sully" Sullenberger? How about U.S. Airways Flight 1549 and the Miracle on the Hudson? Sully was the pilot who experienced an emergency while flying a jetliner with 155 passengers on board, stepped up, grabbed the bull by the horns and was able to safely land the plane on the Hudson River with no injuries to his passengers. He was the experienced professional whose training and personal commitment to the well-being of his passengers and crew made him the right man in the right place at the right time.
If you and your family were flying somewhere for a vacation, who would you want piloting your plane? No question, you would want Captain Sully Sullenberger, or at least someone with the same degree of experience and dedication to the safety and well-being of the passengers.
While the airlines probably will never let the passengers choose their pilots, the Republican voters of Kosciusko County do have the chance to choose their candidate for sheriff in the primary election set for Tuesday, May 8. Somewhat like the emergency situation that faced Captain Sully over the Hudson, last year the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department found itself in uncharted waters and rough seas due to the resignation of our sheriff. As a result, there was considerable uneasiness among the department personnel about their future and a sincere and justifiable public concern about whether or not there would be a continuation of the quality of service that had been the hallmark of that agency. Those questions were put to rest on June 21, 2017, when the Republican caucus chose Captain William "Rocky" Goshert to fill out the remaining portion of the term as sheriff.
Rocky recognized the need to stabilize the situation, alleviate the anxiety on the part of the department employees, and to restore the public's confidence in the department. He immediately took control, steadied the ship and has kept the department on a straight and direct course. The quality of service that we, the public, have come to expect from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department never stopped. Rocky Goshert has proven to be a determined leader, with excellent management skills and vast law enforcement experience whose personal credo is "Leadership by Personal Example."
U.S. Airways had its incident with Flight 1549 and they had the right man in the right spot at the right time: Captain Sully Sullenberger. The result was the Miracle on the Hudson.
Kosciusko County had its incident with the resignation of the prior sheriff and we too had the right man in the right spot at the right time. That was Sheriff Rocky Goshert. The result has been our Miracle on Main Street.
Rocky could have well decided to just retire and ride off into the sunset when this situation arose. But he didn't. He answered the call and brought his department home safely. For that, he has my support. I would hope that he has your support as well. It is well-deserved.
