Lady Lancers Split With Huntington

The Lady Lancers were inches away from a sweep of the Foresters (12-10, 7-5 Crossroads League). Huntington made a seventh-inning rally in the opener to win 4-2, but Grace split the day with a 5-4 victory in the second game.
Grace was in control for most of the opener. Starting pitcher Hannah Middlebrooks held the Foresters in check, apart from a first inning run.
The Lady Lancers (9-17, 3-9 CL) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Kyleigh Garner and Olivia Scarbrough walked to start the rally, and Kaitlyn Heffner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hannah Herbster then belted a drive off the right field fence, scoring two runs in the process.
Grace’s 2-1 lead held through six innings, but the Foresters weren’t finished in the seventh.
Huntington led off the seventh with three straight singles, followed by an error from Grace. An RBI double from HU produced the third run of the frame, giving Huntington a 4-2 lead.
Kaitlyn Heffner singled to start the bottom of the seventh, but she was stranded on third base to end the game.
Scarbrough was 1 for 2 with a run, and Herbster was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
In the second game, Grace took the lead first. Abby Mozingo and Sam Heim laced back-to-back singles. Britney Young then singled up the middle to plate Mozingo for the game’s first run.
Huntington managed to pull ahead 3-1 after scoring in the fourth and fifth innings, but Grace responded with a spurt of its own.
In the bottom of the fifth, Grace racked up five hits to score four runs. Chandler Elliott had an RBI single to score Mozingo, and Britney Young’s RBI single tied the game.
Garner then drove in Emily Bobb for the go-ahead run, and Hannah Harless’s sacrifice fly put the Lady Lancers on top 5-3.
Huntington pulled back a run in the top of the sixth and had two baserunners on, but Harless snagged a line drive at shortstop to end the inning.
Dori Knight took care of the rest from the pitcher’s circle, shutting down Huntington in the seventh to finish with a complete game. Knight allowed two earned runs on nine hits with no walks.
Heim batted a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored, and Young was also perfect at 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Mozingo was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
The Lady Lancers continue play on Tuesday, playing a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Goshen.
