According to court documents filed Tuesday, Syracuse Police Department officer Michael Bumbaugh responded Sunday to a male subject shot with a firearm at 108 E. Haiden Drive, Apt. 36, Syracuse. Bumbaugh found a male subject, later identified as Seabolt, with a large laceration above his right eye, a large bruise on the back and side of his head, and abrasions on his elbow and shoulder from being battered.

Seabolt said four male subjects had broken into his residence and beat him with a baseball bat and stole the Remington 1100 20-gauge shotgun, Savage HMR rifle and $2,150 in cash. He said two of the subjects were Ries and Mauk, but the other two subjects had their faces covered.

Medical personnel arrived and took Seabolt to Goshen Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Seabolt told SPD officer Joseph Keene that he, Ries and Mauk had had issues about girls and the sale of marijuana. He said during the beating, he was able to obtain his hand gun and the subjects ran out of the residence. He followed them outside and started shooting at them.

Keene then spoke with Ries, who allegedly admitted he was at the residence and hit Seabolt with a baseball bat.

Mauk allegedly admitted to Keene that Ries, the other two unnamed male juveniles and he planned to go to the victim’s residence and get revenge. He said they drove to the apartment complex, parked across the road in a field, walked to Seabolt’s apartment and watched him through the apartment window.

Mauk said they had two Airsoft guns with the orange tip painted black. Mauk had one of the guns with him. When Seabolt was in the kitchen, allegedly rolling a marijuana cigarette, all four of the juveniles rushed through the door.

Ries hit Seabolt with a baseball bat that was found in the residence.

Later, when the four juveniles arrived at one of the teen’s homes, the teen had $200 he had stolen from Seabolt’s apartment. When they were running from the apartment, Ries had the victim’s shotgun and rifle.

The third juvenile told Keene that Ries, Mauk, the other juvenile and he all went to the victim’s residence to get revenge. He repeated the same story Mauk had told.

He added that Ries began hitting the victim while he and the other juvenile searched for property to steal. The other juvenile found cash in the bedroom and a shotgun and a rifle in the living room, which they took when they fled the residence.

Seabolt shot at them and shot the third juvenile in the lower leg.

A SPD news release issued Monday stated three juveniles were taken to the South Bend Juvenile Justice Center. The fourth juvenile suspect was still wanted for questioning in regard to the case.

The Syracuse Police were assisted by the Kosciusko and Elkhart County Sheriff’s Departments, North Webster, Milford Police, Winona Lake police and the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office.
