LEESBURG – Two people were hurt, including a 2-year-old boy, in an accident Saturday morning near Leesburg, where officers found drugs in the vehicle.

The driver of the 2004 Ford Explorer, Kole F. Adams, 22, Tecumseh Drive, Nappanee, complained of pain to the abdomen/pelvis areas.

His passenger, Carter Adams, 2, same address, had bruising to the head.

Both were taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment of their injuries.

Adams’ SUV was headed north on CR 300E when it left the west side of the road for an unknown reason, the report states. It continued off the road and hit a tree. The vehicle sustained damaged to the front.

While officers were looking for registration in the vehicle, they found a small plastic blue straw on the driver’s seat; it tested positive for methamphetamine in a field test kit. A silver-colored metal pipe was found in the center console, which smelled of burnt marijuana, and a small plastic bag containing an unknown yellow powder  was found in a maroon zip-up container on the passenger side, the report states.

A search warrant for a blood and urine screen was obtained due to the items found in the vehicle. The warrant was served on the driver at Lutheran Hospital.

A witness following the SUV east on CR?700N said he saw the vehicle run off the road on several occasions. The witness said he was still behind the SUV when it turned north onto CR 300E. He said he was getting ready to call 911 due to the erratic driving of the vehicle but then saw it go off the road, striking a tree. The witness called 911 to report the accident, then helped Adams from the vehicle.

The witness also said he saw the boy in the back driver’s side seat in a car seat. He said he removed a blanket on the lap of the boy and saw that he was not buckled into the car seat and the buckles were behind the passenger in the car seat. He saw a cut on the 2-year-old’s head and applied direct pressure to the wound.

The witness said the driver was lying on the ground moaning.

Damage to the Ford Explorer was estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.

The accident remains under investigation, according to KCSD Capt. Chris McKeand.
