NORTH MANCHESTER — James Leon Frieden, 92, Silver Lake, died at 1:50 p.m. March 1, 2018, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Wabash County, to Henry W. and Anna Pearl Reed Frieden. He married Margaret Shenefield on Dec. 15, 1946. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Dec. 23, 1943, to May 23, 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater as radioman 2nd class petty officer. He was awarded two battle stars for the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

He managed Strauss Elevator, Silver Lake, for 32 years.

He was a life member of VFW Post 1126, Warsaw; a member of American Legion Post 268 and Loyal Order of the Moose, both of North Manchester, and the Indiana Grain Association; and was a member and served as president of Northeastern Indiana Grain Association.

He was an EMT and founding member of South Central EMS, Silver Lake. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Manchester.

Survivors include two sons, John Frieden, North Manchester, and Von Frieden, Claypool; two daughters, Nancy Shenefield, North Manchester, and Joyce O’Brien, Silver Lake; grandchildren: Mitchell (Bonnie) Shenefield, North Manchester; Anna (Tom) Ganz, North Manchester; Marjae (Jimmy) Cashdollar, Fort Wayne; and James O’Brien, Columbus; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffery James Frieden; a daughter, Barbara Jo Frieden; two sons-in-law, Mark Shenefield and Mike O’Brien; a granddaughter, Doris Frieden; and a grandson, Cameron O’Brien.

A memorial service is planned for noon Saturday, March 24 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 113 W. Main St., North Manchester. Pastor Judy Follis and Pastor J. P. Freeman will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date.

Calling is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 24 at the church.
