SOUTH WHITLEY — Robert James Ruhlen, 67, Sidney, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Peabody Retirement Community, where he was in physical rehabilitation.

He was born Feb. 21, 1951, in Kenton, Ohio, a son of the late Richard and Marian Arnett Ruhlen. His formative years were spent in the Kenton area, where he graduated from Hardin High School, Kenton, in 1969.

He had lived in rural South Whitley since 2005 and for the past three years, Sidney.

In 1985, he went to work for the Black Lake Lodge, Whitley County, as a counselor. Later, he worked for Medtronic, Warsaw. From 1995 to 2016, he was employed by Wabash Valley, Silver Lake.

An accomplished small engine repairman, he enjoyed collecting, restoring and showing small gasoline engines. He participated in the bowling leagues at the Warsaw Bowl, Warsaw. 

He is survived by his two daughters, Torie (Travis) Galloway, Sidney, and Tina M. Ruhlen, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Janeane (Don) Steiner, Kansas City, Kan.; and two brothers, George (Carol) Ruhlen, Dunkirk, Ohio, and Dave (Pam) Ruhlen, Kenton.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Micah, and a brother, Jerry Ruhlen.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

The family will receive guests on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at a later date in South Whitley Cemetery.
