Linda was born Jan. 30, 1941, in Rochester, to Willis E. and Mary E. Meinert Nelson. She was one of four children and the only daughter.
Linda and Bud were married on Aug. 26, 1963. As Linda often said, she and Bud started life with $13, a suitcase and a duffel bag.
As a military wife, Linda and her family were privileged to see a lot of the world during her husband’s 20 years in the United States Air Force, including stints at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany; SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe), Belgium; and Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colo. In Europe, Linda’s inquisitive spirit took her to many historical sites. Among her favorite experiences were visits to Paris and London. A trip with her gal pals to Italy was particularly memorable.
After Bud’s retirement from the Air Force, the family moved back to Akron, where Linda enjoyed trips with life-long friends to Las Vegas; Dresden, Ohio (during the peak of the Longaberger Basket craze in the ’90s); and an East Coast bus trip in which Linda organized an off-script night-time cab ride to see Niagara Falls.
Linda also had a creative side and enjoyed oil painting lessons while stationed in Germany. Linda loved to laugh and have fun, never shying away from a good time, including going with friends to casinos. Linda was a frequent shopper on QVC, and news of her passing resulted in a 67.8 percent decline in QVC stock on the next day.
Survivors include her two loving daughters, Tanya (Shawn) Sriver, Fishers, and Penny (Dave) Sterk, Akron. She also leaves behind her brothers: Willis E. Nelson Jr., Indianapolis; Fred A. (Roberta) Nelson, Indianapolis; and Lyle Kent (Cecile) Nelson, Atlanta; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Linda was a generous, loyal and loving friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
At her request, a graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Akron Cemetery. A celebration dinner will take place at the Akron Community Center following the service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.
