Vikings Fall Behind Early In Loss

Tippecanoe Valley (5-18) didn’t play a single senior in the contest, while NorthWood (17-5) played six and started three. The seniors accounted for 45 of the team’s 55 points.
After a slow start to the game, those tangibles finally played a role in the game for the host school. A made three-pointer by junior Kaden Gongwer got NorthWood on the board near the five-minute mark and started a scoring run that put Valley in a huge hole.
By the end of the first quarter, the Panthers led 19-0 and made three triples in the stanza. The Vikings couldn’t find the bottom of the net, missing its first eight attempts.
“We couldn’t make anything,” Valley coach Chad Patrick said. “It’s very tough to win when you can’t put the ball in the basket, especially against a team like NorthWood.”
Valley finally found the bottom of the net after eight and a half minutes of play, as sophomore Tanner Trippiedi made a three and started a small 5-0 run for the team.
The Vikings were able to outscore the Panthers in the second stanza, but were down 18 at halftime.
Valley opened the second half with another triple from Trippiedi. NorthWood kept the Vikings from making a run and scored on its next possession down the court to keep the momentum. A basket from behind the arc from sophomore Jalen Potter ended the highlights in the quarter for Valley and the Vikings were down 40-23.
It took almost three minutes of play before the Vikings scored in the fourth quarter and it was another three-pointer, this one from junior Wes Melanson.
Valley ended the game the way it started, with a three-pointer, this time from sophomore Jaydin Conley.
NorthWood made six triples in the game, while the Vikings made five, but missed 15 attempts.
NorthWood senior Brad Delio scored all nine of his points from the arc.
The Panthers made the most of missed opportunities, grabbing 36 rebounds to help push their winning streak to nine games.
Trippiedi led Valley with 10 points and junior Jalen Shepherd tallied eight.
NorthWood senior Luke Holland led all scorers with 15 points, shooting 6 of 11 from the floor. Classmate Caleb Lung added 12 points to help the cause.
Despite the outcome, Patrick is optimistic about next year and knows the team can improve because of the starters and role players returning.
“There are a lot of players that can step up and be really strong players for us,” he said. “It’s just whoever wants to do it and put the time in.
“We’re going to build this program back to where it used to be. We’re going to start working hard on Monday. I love these kids, this community and can’t wait to get back to work.”
NorthWood will play Lakeland at 7 p.m. in the sectional championship at the Panther Pit. The Lakers won 54-46 over Northeast Corner Conference foe West Noble. This will be the Panthers’ sixth time in the last seven years playing for a sectional title.
