TVHS Athletic Director Duane Burkhart, who has been with the school corporation for 35 years – 24 in his current role – has announced he will retire upon completion of the 2017-2018 school year and spring athletic season.
Burkhart made the announcement official with a letter to Superintendent Brett Boggs and the school board.
“After 35 years of teaching, coaching and athletic administration, I wish to inform you of my retirement from Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation after this school year,” Burkhart said in his letter.
“I always had a goal of early retirement, which I shared with you and the board three years ago.”
Burkhart went on to say that he, his wife Angie and their sons Britton and Taylor “have been blessed to be a part of this community and we have made many memories and established many relationships which we will always treasure.”
Burkhart has been at Tippecanoe Valley since 1983.
In his 35 years at TVHS, Burkhart has also served as the head coach for girls basketball, baseball and track and field, and was an assistant coach in the football program.
“It has been a privilege to not only be an educator over 35 years, but to also have been a coach in numerous sports dating back to my first year of teaching at Valley in 1983,” Burkhart wrote in his letter.
“I thank you for the opportunity to serve as athletic director the past 24 years, as I have enjoyed the challenges and opportunity working with numerous coaches over time and monitoring the success of our athletes and programs.”
Burkhart also stated in the letter he is willing to help assist in the transition period when a new athletic director is hired.
“Angie and I will still be around to attend the sporting events, as we enjoy watching second-generation student-athletes from families of former students we have come to know and love over the years,” said Burkhart.
“Thank you again for the opportunity to serve Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation, which I care about very much, and I will enjoy supporting future success of the school and athletic programs.”
