On Tuesday, Richard A. Irwin, Etna Green, was named Kosciusko County’s Veteran of the Month. After graduating from Mentone High School, Irwin was drafted into the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky. Irwin completed his Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Sill, Okla., before serving in Vietnam as a field observer. He earned the Army Commendation Medal for exceptional meritorious service in support of an Allied counter insurgency and a Bronze Star for heroism. In 1982, 13 years after returning home, the effects of Agent Orange left Irwin in a wheelchair. Pictured is Irwin (C) surrounded by his family, including his wife Libbie, daughter Laurie, son Chris, daughter Ashlee, and grandchildren Gavin Allee and Declin. Also pictured are Kosciusko County Commissioners Brad Jackson and Bob Conley and county veterans affairs officer Rich Maron.
