TLCC Hosts 2nd Annual Legacy Cup

LEESBURG – Tippecanoe Lake Country Club held the second annual Legacy Cup on Saturday and honored long-time member Donald Frantz.

With a twist to the tournament this year, participants of the event used original hickory golf clubs and ouimet golf balls to re-enact the golf style from the early 1900s. A majority of the golfers also wore knickers and other items to replicate the look of the players from that time.

TLCC pro Brock Wicker got the idea for the event from club member Luke Baker, who played in a hickory golf club tournament

TLCC ordered the hickory golf clubs from Play Hickory, Inc. out of San Diego, Calif.

The 92-year old Frantz passed away in March and was a member of the club for over half a century. He co-owned and operated Frantz Lumber Co. in North Manchester for more than 40 years until he retired in 1987.

On his 92nd birthday in November, Frantz sank a 110-foot birdie putt on the first hole at Deltona Golf Club in Florida and shot an 88. It was the 64th time he shot his age or better.

“This hickory golf club tournament was something new and innovative for the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club,” said Wicker.

“We had around 40 participants and it was a true test for the players competing with the same equipment that our Tippecanoe Lake members played with back in 1926 when the Club opened.”

The participants played on four-man teams and used a best-of-two-balls format during the event. The quartet of Rob and Ross Kesler, Craige Westover and Wesley Whisler won the event with a score of 79. The team of Ed and Mike Wiley and David and Jeremy Ash finished second, one stroke back.
