Warsaw Man Faces Confinement, Strangulation, Battery Counts

Alfred Walter Paul McDonald, 52, of 602 S. McClellan St., Warsaw, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 4:19 p.m. Tuesday for criminal confinement with bodily injury. His preliminary bond was set at $20,250.
Court records filed Tuesday list the charges against McDonald as criminal confinement, a level 5 felony; strangulation, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery with moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony.
On Monday, Warsaw Police officer Jaime De La Fuente responded to the 500 block of South McClellan Street regarding a man reportedly dragging a woman by the hair. Upon arrival, Fuente overhead radio traffic from WPD Lt. Paul Hodges that the victim was in front of 511 S. McClellan St. He was able to obtain the suspect’s name was McDonald and that he went to 602 S. McClellan St.
Fuente arrived at 602 S. McClellan and spoke with the owner of the residence who was standing in the driveway. The homeowner said McDonald left on foot, and WPD units were unable to find him.
Fuente spoke with the victim who said McDonald and she had been dating for about a year. She had been living with him for the last eight months. She said she lives in constant fear from the physical and mental abuse that McDonald inflicts on her.
Fuente saw the victim had new and old bruises and cuts on her legs, arms, back and face. Some of her hair had been ripped out in chunks and her face was bruised.
The woman further told police she had been confined to the bedroom and not allowed to leave. If she needed to use the restroom, McDonald would give her a bucket. If McDonald had to use the restroom, he would make the victim go into the restroom with him so he could keep an eye on her, according to court documents.
The victim said that on Monday, McDonald became angry and started calling her names. He hit her with a belt across her back. She went into the fetal position to protect herself. McDonald then started punching and kicking her while she was on the ground. According to police, he placed a pillow over her face in an attempt to smother her. He then placed both hands over her throat and applied pressure with his thumbs, which caused her to momentarily lose consciousness.
Court documents state the abuse continued until somebody pulled into the driveway and she escaped through a window while McDonald was distracted.
McDonald chased her down McClellan Street, caught her and beat her again, according to police paperwork.
He then dragged her back to his residence. The victim said she believed McDonald let her go after police were called.
Hodges spoke with a witness who said she saw McDonald dragging the victim across the street by her hair.
On Monday, WPD officer Paul Heaton went to 602 S. McClellan St. looking for McDonald. He spoke with the homeowner who said she saw McDonald physically bringing the victim back to his residence on Monday. The woman gave Heaton permission to search the residence for McDonald.
In the bedroom where McDonald and the victim have been staying, Heaton saw a metal can that he believes the victim was forced to use the bathroom in.
A warrant for McDonald’s arrest was issued with a $20,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
