Troyer Named Milford School Principal

Troyer, who just completed his doctorate work at Indiana State, has been an assistant principal at Northridge High School. Previously he’s taught at Northridge and Carroll high schools. The Middlebury resident is a 2000 graduate of Northridge.
He takes over for Cindy Kaiser, who retired at the end of the school year after 39 years with the school corporation.
Kaiser was among 11 retirees recognized by the board. Two, Stephen Jones and Cyndi Thornburg, were awarded retirement plaques posthumously. The other seven were Julie Baird, Collette Berg, Mitzi Reber, Janet Fisher, Donna Hollar, Dawn Randall, Glenna Fay Biddle and Thomas Steiner. The retirees had a total of 293 years of service to the Wawasee School Corporation.
The board approved a bid of $1,558,500 from Project Design and Piping of Fort Wayne for the high school’s HVAC renovation project. The move allows for the replacement of air handlers in the media center, the “Brickyard,” the pool lobby and the locker rooms, as well as the demolition of pool duct work, and a new ceiling and light system over the pool. Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington said much of the equipment is original to the building, which recently graduated its 50th class. He added that the work wouldn’t begin until after Labor Day.
Edington also updated the board on the renovations underway at Milford School. He said the small gym, which serves the elementary school, the cafeteria and the large gym (serving the junior high) is getting a new ceiling, paint and wall coverings. The rooms along the north side of the building have all been gutted. Those renovations will be complete by the time school starts.
Another project the school corporation is looking at is a renovation to the high school auditorium. Edington said work needs to be done on the sound, lights, curtain and stage.
Director of Finance Jim Evans announced the price of hot lunches will go up 10 cents across the board. He said there’s a law that requires schools to eventually charge enough for a school lunch that the revenue generated matched the federal meal money received. Evans said, “we’re quite a ways from that,” estimating that the difference currently sits at about a dollar a meal.
Evans added there wasn’t a specific time period to meet the federal mandate.
In the “good news” portion of the meeting, the board heard:
• Lacey Helfers was “Best of Show” in the 50th annual Wawasee High School Art Show.
• Every sports team (and many other groups) had the opportunity to ride the “Warrior Bus” to at least one event.
• Tiffany Koble was the recipient of a $2,500 AXA Achievement scholarship.
• The Drama club received a $6,000 grant towards its New York City study trip from the DEKKO Foundation.
• The ECO Challenge project received a $10,000 grant from the DEKKO Foundation.
• The marine mechanics program received donations of a boat, two personal watercraft and accompanying trailers.
Board members also approved overnight trips for the girls soccer team, the boys soccer team and ECO Challenge to Sawyer, Mich,; the boys basketball team to Knightstown; the cross country teams to Angola; boys track to Bloomington, and the FFA an overnight stay in Syracuse.
Edington speculated there may be a special school board meeting June 26. The next scheduled meeting of the Wawasee School Board is 5:30 p.m. July 10.
