Tigers Take Team Title; Kruschwitz Medalist

One of the strengths of Warsaw’s boys golf team, said second-year coach Rich Haddad, is its depth.

That depth was on display Friday at Rozella Ford Golf Club as the Tigers overcame a three-stroke deficit at the turn to Culver Academies, carded four scores in the 70s and won the program’s 28th sectional championship.

The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, move on to Thursday’s regional at Stonehenge.

Warsaw won the team title with a four-man score of 308, edging Culver Academies by just one stroke.

Columbia City claimed third place and the final regional berth with a score of 316.

Manchester sophomore Harley Kruschwitz fired a 3-over 73 to win medalist honors and advance individually. Triton’s Beau Hepler (76) and Plymouth’s Chapman Yoder (77) also advanced as individuals.

“It was tough. When they posted the scores after nine holes and we were down three strokes to Culver (Academies) ... we knew they were playing well,” said Haddad, whose team shot 309 at the sectional last year and won by 10 strokes.

“We knew we had to play well on the back, but one of the strengths of our team all year has been the depth we’ve had. We’ve had five guys shooting good scores, and I just believed that we’d have the players on the back to play steady, play strong.

“I felt really confident we could get out. The first goal is to get to the regional, but to win the sectional for the second year in a row feels great. I told the boys I am super proud of their attitude, their spirit and how hard they played all the way through, but I’m happy for them to be sectional champs.”

Triton finished fourth in the 11-team field with a 327, followed by Plymouth (349), Manchester (352), Wawasee (360), Huntington North (370), Whitko (388), Northfield (397) and Tippecanoe Valley (423).

Sam Yeager led Warsaw with a 75, followed by Luke Delp (76), Jacob LaLonde (78) and Chase Byron (79).

Tommy Meier rounded out the Tigers’ lineup with an 83.

“He’s been really close. Jacob has had some really good front nines and then he’s struggled on the back a couple times recently,” Haddad said of LaLonde, who played in the No. 5 spot for the Tigers.

“He put together a full 18 and had a solid score. Today, he had a couple bad holes in the middle of the back nine, but I’m so proud of him for just sticking with it, hanging tough, and he really came in solid. He parred the last hole of his round. I’m happy for him.”

Triton had a pair of scores in the 70s at the top of its lineup with Hepler (76) and Isaac Wall (78), but struggled a bit with its 3-4-5 players.

Chase Butler and Keegan Westafer shot 85 and 88, respectively, while Brock Watkins carded a 95.

To add to the disappointment of not advancing to the regional as a team, Wall missed advancing individually by just one stroke.

“It’s what we tell the kids. Sometimes we think they take things a little for granted, or they try and hit that hero shot instead of swallowing their pride, hitting it out, hitting it on the green,” said Triton coach Blake Schori when asked about Wall narrowly missing a regional berth.

“It came down to one shot. He had his chances on the back. I?hate it for him because he’s a senior, and he’s been a solid foundation for this group.”

En route to medalist honors, Kruschwitz shot 39 on the front side and 34 on the back.

His round included five bogeys and a birdie on the front side, and a bogey and two birdies on the back nine.

“Today I didn’t really have my swing the whole time, but I scored really well,” said Kruschwitz, who finished second in the sectional a year ago when he shot 75 as a freshman.

“I was able to get it together, though it kind of fell apart at the end, but I was able to get into the clubhouse and I was happy.”

Nathan Self and Konrad Borgmann shot 83 and 91, respectively, for the Squires, while Dylan Brubaker and Klayton Hendrix shot 105 and 106.

Zach Leedy led Wawasee with an 80, while Cade Brouyette carded an 87 to pace Valley, and Cade Bechtold led Whitko with a 92.
