Potpourri: No Love For Pelosi From These Dems

July 28, 2018 at 1:08 a.m.

Both Democrat challengers in northcentral Indiana’s two congressional districts are putting distance between themselves and former House leader Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi is a favorite target of conservatives, who cast the former speaker of the house as a left coast liberal elite. If Dems retake the House in the fall election, Pelosi is positioned to return as speaker.

However, 2nd District candidate Mel Hall, who faces Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, announced Thursday he would not support Pelosi for speaker or minority leader.

“Washington is broken – and career politicians in both parties are to blame,” Hall said in a news release.  “Electing new leadership – in both parties – is an important step in getting Congress to work for the people.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Democrat Courtney Tritch, the Fort Wayne Democrat challenging U.S. Rep. Jim Banks for the 3rd District, said they’ve had to fend off claims by Banks that Tritch is aligned with Pelosi.

Campaign manager David Myles said Tritch is waiting to see who might pursue leadership positions. “It doesn't make sense to say who she would vote for until she sees who all is running,” he said.

Myles continued, saying Tritch

“does appreciate that the Banks campaign understands two important things: 1) a Democrat will be Speaker of the House and 2) that Courtney will be the one voting because she has won the 3rd District seat.”

Visiting North Manchester –
Civil rights legend Andrew Young will be at  Manchester University for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Jean Childs Young Intercultural Center on Sept. 29.

The center is named in honor of Young’s first wife, a 1954 Manchester graduate. Young was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1977 until 1979 and the mayor of Atlanta from 1982 until 1990, according to a news release from the university.

He and Jean Childs Young were close friends with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke at Manchester on Feb. 1, 1968.

Youth Surge? –  According to Target Smart, Indiana is among the states that are seeing the biggest increase in voter registration among 18- to 29-year-olds. Indiana has seen a 9.9 percent rise, right behind Pennsylvania (16.1), Virginia (10.9) and New York (10.7).

Target Smart says the change has come since the Parkland shootings that resulted in the death of 17 people in February. The group contends the change comes on the heels of a grassroots movement to address gun violence issues.
