Man held in Mentone beauty shop break-In

Matthew Gene Rhines, 28, of 1618 Wallace Ave., Rochester, was arrested at 4:22 p.m. Thursday for theft, a Class A misdemeanor, and burglary, a level 5 felony, with a preliminary bond set at $10,250.
Court documents filed Wednesday list his address as 513 N. Broadway St., Mentone.
On June 16, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputy Tom Waikel responded to a burglary at a hair salon in Mentone. Upon arrival, he spoke with one of the owners who said she was one of three owners of the salon. They had surveillance video of Rhines breaking into the salon. She said Rhines was a relative of the woman who owns the building. In the past, she said they complained to the building owner about the things Rhines was stealing from them and the owner would compensate them for their loss.
All three salon owners identified Rhines as the person in the surveillance video.

Two surveillance videos were provided to KCSD Det. Sgt. Shane Bucher. On June 16, video shows Rhines entering the salon and walking to each individual workstation and looking for tip money. Video also shows Rhines entering the backroom where the gift certificates, products and cash are kept. One salon co-owner said they caught Rhines in the business three times in June.
Court documents said Rhines did not have permission or consent to enter the business at any time.
A salon co-owner said they’ve had $185 in cash, tips, gift certificates and $150 in merchandise taken from the salon.
Bucher interviewed Rhines who admitted he entered the salon.
