Warsaw Man Faces Multiple Charges After Breaking Into Woman’s Home

A Warsaw man was arrested Monday after allegedly breaking into a woman’s home in May, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage and then stealing two televisions.

Anthony Dale Rice, 35, of 1931 La Vista Drive, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:38 p.m. Monday for burglary of a dwelling. His bond was set at $12,500.

Court documents filed July 12 list charges against him as burglary, a level 4 felony; theft, a Class A misdemeanor with a sentence enhancement to make it a level 6 felony; and criminal mischief, a level 6 felony. The enhancement for theft comes from Rice being convicted of conversion Nov. 6, 2008.

On May 3, Winona Lake Police Department officer Michael Foster responded to a burglary/theft at a location redacted in court documents. The homeowner told Foster that she left the residence around 1:30 a.m. May 3 and returned to find the side door to the garage had been forced open.

She found food items dumped all over the kitchen, items dumped on the floor, the toilet had been plugged, the carpet was wet from water and there was no electricity. She said two televisions were stolen.

She also found a size 7 woman’s shoe that did not belong to her. She suspected Rice and his girlfriend, Michelle Lee Shepherd, 35, of 4452 N. 1st Place, Leesburg, may be involved.

Foster saw the ceiling under the master bedroom was falling down and dripping with water. The main electrical breaker had been shut off. Officers got a damage estimate to the residence, which was about $57,300.

Foster spoke with Shepherd, who admitted she was in the residence with Rice. She confirmed she wears a size 7 shoe and was missing one of her shoes. She said Rice damaged the residence and stole two televisions.

Officers obtained consent from Shepherd to search her cellphone and found a photograph in the phone of the shoe that had been left at the residence.

Warsaw Police Department detective Paul Heaton spoke with Rice, who admitted he stole the televisions. He retrieved one of them and provided it to Heaton. Rice said the other television was sold to Cashland by another man. Rice did not know why he flooded the victim’s residence, according to court documents.

Shepherd was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:39 p.m. Monday for burglary to a dwelling and her preliminary bond was set at $12,500.
