Middle School Bands Finish Summer Program

Warsaw Community Schools middle school band students recently concluded their summer band program. Both beginner and advanced students took part in practices, a band cookout, trip and concerts.

According to Band Director Joseph Peloza, students in the beginning band began their endeavors with their instruments through practicing out of their books. Peloza said students made immense progress during their training.

“As a group of beginners just starting, I was impressed by the tone quality they displayed, enthusiasm, and their focus,” he said. “I heard many positive comments from parents after our concert. They enjoyed our dramatic opening to the concert as well as the students’ ability to follow my direction quickly. They could not believe that the students had only been playing for a few weeks.”

The advanced band students performed a concert that included a variety of musical styles. Their selections included “Star-Spangled Banner,” “America, the Beautiful,” “This Is My Country” and music from the musical “Cabaret.”

“They (the students) did an amazing job preparing for this concert. I am fortunate to work with a great group of students,” Peloza said.

In addition to their practices, 66 middle school band students embarked June 23 to Deep River Waterpark, Merrillville.

“Our practices, band cookout, trip and concerts were enjoyed by everybody,” Peloza said. “I had a great time working with the students this year and look forward to a great school year starting in August!”

Purdue Tracking Down 26K Student Applicants Amid Data Breach

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University is tracking down more than 26,000 prospective students to alert them that their names, birthdays, and Social Security numbers were inadvertently sent to the parent of one student applicant.

Purdue Assistant Legal Counsel Trent Klingerman said Thursday that an employee with Purdue's Division of Financial Aid inadvertently sent one prospective student's parent a list of data on the applicants on May 17.

He says that parent immediately notified the sender and cooperated with the university to destroy the file.

Klingerman says Purdue regrets the error but the school has no reason to believe the information was improperly accessed or used.

WLFI-TV reports that Purdue is still mailing those affected letters that include advice on identity protection and is providing them with one year of free credit monitoring.
