Agnes Pruyn Chapman DAR met at 6 p.m. June 26 at the Senior Center in Warsaw with 10 members and 13 guests. Regent Kathy Gawthrop offered a special DAR prayer in observance of Independence Day, followed by the pledge to the flag, the Americans Creed and the Preamble to the Constitution.
Following a carry-in dinner, Gawthrop read the president general's message and announced that the district meeting will be Aug. 7 in Kokomo.
The speaker was retired Brig. Gen. Stewart Goodwin, who is executive director of the Indiana War Memorials Commission. It encompasses 25 acres in downtown Indianapolis. No state has more war memorials honoring veterans than Indiana. Indiana proportionately has more service personnel than any other state. Goodwin said that they are using prisoners to help maintain the huge amount of grounds and flowers. They employ 10 prisoners in the summer and six in the winter. Five prisoners have been hired as regular employees after serving their sentences. Goodwin believes in rehabilitation and feels it is important to help prisoners start a new life when released.
Chaplain Kay Ritter gave a memorial service for deceased DAR members Mary Ettinger and Helen Joan Kindle.
Gawthrop said the chapter won a state certificate award for support of DAR schools and 100 percent participation for the President General's Project. She also thanked Paulene Holderman for her excellent work designing the program books for which the group received recognition.
Two new members were initiated, Brenda Snider and Kelly Susaraba, a mother and daughter from Warsaw.
The next meeting will be at noon Sept. 25 at Richards Restaurant.
Membership in the DAR is open to any woman who had an ancestor who fought in or aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution. Contact Gawthrop at 574-527-2674 with any questions.
