Lady Wildcats Fall In Sectional Opener

Whitko (3-20) trailed early in the first quarter, but a three-pointer from Ellie Snep cut the Prairie Heights’ (6-17) lead to 14-9.
In the second stanza, the Lady Wildcats cut the deficit to 24-20. Whitko had opportunities in the first half, but couldn’t cash in.
“We ran our offensive sets better tonight than we have all year,” said Whitko coach Rick Bragg. “We had some great looks early in the game and had some open shots that we couldn’t make.”
The third quarter belonged to the Lady Wildcats, outscoring Prairie Heights 15-12. Whitko saw its first lead of the game in the period before a buzzer beater by the Lady Panthers recaptured the lead.
Prairie Heights went on an 8-0 run to begin the final frame. Whitko clawed back ,and a three by Anna Ousley tied the game at 47-all and sent the contest into overtime.
The Lady Wildcats fell short in the extra frame, allowing Prairie Heights to shoot 11 free throws, hitting nine of them. The Lady Panthers scored 12 points in the period, compared to Whitko’s five, sealing the victory and moving them into the semifinals on Friday.
“We ended the season the way we started, battling until the end ,” Bragg said. “The foundation is set and the challenge has been issued for our returning players to get in the gym and become better.”
Ellie Snep led Whitko with 18 points and 23 rebounds, and Emi Duggins and Sarah Hewitt tallied 11 points each.
The Lady Wildcats graduate two seniors.
