Wawasee Wins Wrestling Sectional, Triton Places Fourth

PLYMOUTH – Wawasee was victorious at the Plymouth wrestling sectional on Saturday, taking home the team title. Triton placed fourth, Warsaw sixth and Tippecanoe Valley ended the meet in seventh. 

Wrestlers need to finish in the top four to advance to regionals.

For Wawasee, all 14 wrestlers move on to the next round in the state tournament. Jace Alexander (106), Chris Schuller (120), Braxton Alexander (126) and Damien Rodriquez (195) took home first-place marks from the event. Ricardo Romo (113), Geremia Brooks (132), Garrett Stuckman (138), Isiah Faurote (145), Alex Castro (182) and Elisha Tipping (285) were all second-place finishers.

Triton had D’Angelo Shumpert (113) and James Snyder (170) stand atop the podium Saturday. 

Warsaw tallied six wrestlers moving on to the next round. Isaiah Owens (106), Jose Martinez (113) and Dillon Estepp (185) earned third-place nods at the event.

Valley will have three wrestlers move on to the regional.

The regional will take place on Saturday at Penn High School, beginnign at 9 a.m.

Five Wrestlers Advance For Manchester

PERU – The Manchester Squires wrestling team competed at the Peru Sectional on Saturday, finishing in sixth place. The Squires advance five wrestlers to Saturday’s Peru Regional. 

Elijah Burlingame (106), Wade France (152) and Delton Moore (170) all received second-place marks at the event for Manchester. Andrew Cagle (160) and Bryce Kamphues (285) will move on with their teammates. 

Burlingame and France had victories over the No. 2 seeds in their respective weight classes to advance in their brackets. Kamphues advanced to the first regional of his career as a Squire wrestler.

The wrestlers will travel to Peru on Saturday for regionals, which will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Lakeland’s Hot Start Too Much For Wawasee

SYRACUSE – Wawasee lost a non-conference boys basketball matchup to Lakeland Saturday night, falling 54-30 at home.

The Warriors (4-12) saw themselves down early in the game and were unable to make a comeback. Lakeland scored 33 points in the first and third periods alone, more than Wawasee tallied all game.

Wawasee allowed Lakeland (11-6) to have two players score 32 points combined. Cameron Bontrager and Brayden Bontrager scored 18 and 14 points respectively. 

Jairus Boyer dropped nine points for the hosts, while teammate Jacob Hand added eight points. 

Wawasee travels to Northridge Thursday for a Northern Lakes Conference showdown.

Free Throws Sink Tippecanoe Valley

GOSHEN – Tippecanoe Valley traveld to Goshen to play Clinton Christian Saturday night, losing 50-40. 

Fouls hurt the Vikings (2-13) against the non-conference opponent. Valley was called for 23 fouls, giving up 32 foul shots in the contest. Clinton Christian (11-6) took advantage at the line, sinking 22 of those 32 opportunities. 

The Vikings were led by Tanner Trippiedi with 13 points and Alex Morrison and Jace Potter dished in nine apiece. 

Valley stays on the road for its next contest, visiting Three Rivers Conference foe Wabash on Thursday.

Fluke, Hamby Lead Manchester In OT Victory

NORTH MANCHESTER – Coming off a win Friday night against Tippecanoe Valley, Manchester kept rolling against Fort Wayne Concordia Saturday night. The Squires won 66-63 in an overtime thriller.

Mason Hamby dropped a game-high 28 points and Koehl Fluke added 23, scoring over 77 percent of the team’s points.

Manchester (8-7) had a two point lead going into halftime, but saw that slip away in the third period. 

Starting the final stanza, the Squires had to make a comeback over FW Concordia (4-12), outscoring the visitors 14-11 to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Manchester tallied nine points, securing the non-conference win.

The Squires take their four-game winning streak on the road  Thursday, playing at Three Rivers Conferene opponent Northfield.

Whitko Loses Close-Knit TRC Contest

SOUTH WHITLEY – The Whitko Wildcats were unable to beat the Three River Conference’s second-place team Maconaquah Saturday night, losing 45-42.

Whitko came out of the gate quickly, holding a 13-5 lead after the first eight minutes of action. Maconaquah (10-4, 4-0 TRC) went on a 32-17 skid over the next two quarters of play, standing to be the difference.

The Wildcats (7-12, 4-3 TRC) were able to crawl back and make it close, but fell short at the end.

River West dropped 18 points to lead the hosts.

Whitko remains at home for its next game, hosting TRC foe North Miami Thursday night.

Lady Wildcats Win 39-32 Over Maconaquah

SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko won its Three Rivers Conference game against Maconaquah Saturday night. The Lady Wildcats (3-19, 2-7 TRC) scored 22 points in the second half, leading to their 39-32 victory.

After a close first half, Whitko had a 17-14 lead. They maintained the advantage for the rest of the contest.

Ellie Snep poured in 17 points and Emi Duggins tallied 10 points to push Whitko to victory. 

Whitko will play Prarie Heights Tuesday night for its first game in the 2A girls sectional. All games in the sectional will be played at Central Noble.

Lady Wildcats Win 39-32 Over Maconaquah

GOSHEN – Lakeland Christian concluded its regular season Saturday night, defeating Clinton Christian 54-32. The win marks the team’s fifth win in a row.

The Lady Cougars (14-8) dropped 18 points in the first stanza, proving to be the difference maker. 

LCA had double-digit scoring columns in three of the four periods, while holding Clinton Christian to only one. 

Hope Fancil tallied 17 points and Tori Calizo had 10.

The Lady Cougars begin 1A sectional play on Tuesday, traveling to Bethany Christian. The teams played each other twice in the regular season, with LCA losing both times, including a 30-29 thriller.
