NORTH MANCHESTER – It was a record-breaking night for Manchester High School junior Kennedy Fierstos. It was the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings, however, that got the win Thursday night.

In the regular season finale for both Three Rivers Conference teams, Class 3A No. 7 Valley held a slight advantage after each quarter and secured a 48-41 win over the host Lady Squires.

The Lady Vikings, who improved to 19-3 overall and 7-2 in the TRC standings, led 16-14 after one quarter of play, 24-21 at halftime and 32-28 heading into the final frame.

Manchester closed the regular season 11-11 overall and 6-3 in the TRC.

Fierstos made 3 of 5 three-point attempts Thursday – making 3 of 6 attempts from the field overall and 4 of 4 at the free throw line – en route to a team-high 13 points.

Fierstos’ three treys pushed her total to 50 this season, breaking the program’s previous single-season record of 47 set by Noelle Patrick during the 2008-09 campaign.

Erika Kendall tallied 11 points, six boards and a pair of assists for Manchester, while Sydney Day chipped in with six points and five boards, and Kerigan Hatfield finished with six points.

Three players scored in double-figures for Valley, led by junior Sophie Bussard’s game-high 22 points. Bussard added seven rebounds, three steals and an assist to her stat line.

Junior Emily Peterson tallied 11 points, four assists and three boards in the win, while senior Addy Miller contributed 10 points, three steals and a pair of assists.

Sophomore Jillian Walls and senior Asia O’Connor rounded out the Lady Vikings’ scoring with three and two points, respectively.

Turnovers proved to be a key stat in the game. Valley committed just seven turnovers, while the Lady Squires had 19.

The Lady Vikings have won 35 of their last 37 TRC games, but Northfield claimed the title this year with an 8-1 record. Northfield beat Valley 53-52 on Jan. 4.

Valley and Rochester tied for second in the league standings at 7-2.

In search of their fourth straight sectional title, the Lady Vikings open state tournament action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Lakeland in Class 3A Sectional 21 at Fairfield High School.

Manchester drew a bye in Class 2A Sectional 37 at Oak Hill and will play either No. 1 Oak Hill or Rochester in a semifinal on Feb. 2.
