Warsaw MobilePack Seeks To Raise $220K By September
By David [email protected]
Tuesday evening at the Warsaw Community Public Library, MobilePack leaders kicked off the fundraising drive by explaining what FMSC is, why they chose to be involved, what its goals are and how it hopes to raise the needed money with the help of those at that meeting.
“The impact that we hope to have is to build compassion in Warsaw community while bringing hope to vulnerable children through FMSC’s 1 million meal event,” MobilePack coordinator Megan Stone said.
The fourth annual MobilePack event is scheduled for Oct. 17-20 in the Gordon Student Recreation Center at Grace College & Seminary in Winona Lake.

FMSC is a Christian nonprofit that provides nutritionally complete meals for starving, malnourished and hungry people, according to its website. The prepackaged dry meals – called Mannapacks and costing less than a quarter each to make – are funded and assembled by donor-volunteers in the United States. FMSC food has reached more than 70 countries in its history.
Stone said that she was introduced to FMSC while visiting friends in Minneapolis. “We packed meals as a fun outing at one of the permanent sites. Our children enjoyed it so much that we went back several times,” she said. “And when I was first asked to be a part of a team, I jumped at the opportunity because I knew that FMSC is such a champion organization that makes a tremendous impact in world hunger.”
Mannapack rice packets were handed out to the crowd of potential volunteers and fundraisers Tuesday so they could see what the packets looked like. FMSC development adviser Michelle Henn, from Aurora, Ill., said FMSC has permanent packing locations that pack meals six days a week year-round.
“We really have a high goal as an organization to pack the meals that are needed by our partners,” Henn said. “Unfortunately, what we have found is the need typically outweighs our ability to produce the meals. So we’re in a constant state of trying to pack and produce more meals to meet the needs of the starving and malnourished around the world. That’s where our MobilePack events really come in and help make a difference.”
FMSC’s fiscal year ends in February, with the next fiscal year beginning in March.
She said disasters in Puerto Rico, Haiti and Houston caused the group to raise its goal from 305 million meals by February to 315 million.
If Warsaw MobilePack can raise the money to pack 1 million meals, she said, that will help FMSC fill that need as it heads into its next fiscal year.
A $50 donation can purchase a box of food, $80 can sponsor a child for a year, $365 can sponsor a family of four for a year, and a donation of $1,800 can sponsor a pallet for a year.
Holli Deloe, leadership team member, said it will cost $220,000 to pack 1 million meals. “Think of it this way: 22 cents a meal. Eighty dollars to feed one child for a year, she said. “We can’t feed our own children for $80 a year, really, and we know that. That’s significant. Three hundred sixty-five dollars will feed four children globally.”
Deloe said it will take 5,000 volunteers to do the packing, and Warsaw has done it three other times. “This event is enormous. And by the way, it is the largest volunteer-based operation to happen in Kosciusko County, which I think is incredible,”?she said.
Before a leading a short question-and-answer session, Megan Stone issued a call to action:
“We’re inviting each of you willing to unite in purpose in making 2018 Warsaw MobilePack event a remarkable success by promptly joining us. … So we have approximately nine months until our event … but the work will start now, so we will need everyone’s help to reach our 1 million meal fundraising goal.”
