Second-Half Surge Lifts Valley Over Wawasee

AKRON – Playing the final home game of her high school career, Tippecanoe Valley senior Addy Miller made sure she and fellow seniors Olivia Trippiedi and Asia O'Connor went out with a win.

In a non-conference clash against the Wawasee Lady Warriors, Miller made 5 of 6 shot attempts in the second half Tuesday night, scoring 12 of her game-high 17 points after the intermission as the Class 3A No. 7 Lady Vikings rallied for a 46-33 victory.

After trailing 7-5 at the end of the first quarter and 20-14 at halftime, the Lady Vikings outscored Wawasee 32-13 over the final 16 minutes and improved to 18-3 on the season.

The Lady Warriors, who have lost their last five meetings with Valley, fell to 11-10.

“She got a couple early drives in the third quarter to really set the right tone for us in the second half,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said of Miller, who was 7 of 11 from the field overall.

“We were down six at halftime, and honestly I felt fortunate to only be down six as poorly as we shot the ball ... I think at one point we were 2 of 10, or 2 of 12. She got two quick baskets off dribble penetration, left-handers, driving hard to the basket. And then she got a couple good looks and hit some three-pointers ... one was off a set play out of a timeout, she stepped back and hit a three.

“That was a key for us offensively. She played well in the second half, and was able to stay in the basketball game (despite foul trouble). Defensively she did some things for us, too. She played well, she played like a senior. Olivia Trippiedi played like a senior. Asia O’Connor played like a senior. That’s what we want.”

Trippiedi scored seven points in the win, five in the fourth quarter, while O’Connor finished with six points and eight rebounds.

Of Valley’s 15 points in the fourth quarter, 13 were scored by the senior trio of Miller, Trippiedi and O’Connor.

Junior Sophie Bussard netted the other two fourth-quarter points for the Lady Vikings and finished the game with 12 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists.

Valley and Wawasee could meet again next week in Class 3A Sectional 21 at Fairfield High School.

The Lady Vikings open state tournament play Tuesday against Lakeland, with the winner playing Wawasee in the semifinals.

Tuesday night’s matchup in Akron was a tale of two halves, and the first half definitely went the way of the Lady Warriors.

“That’s what makes Tippy Valley a ranked team, and why they’ve had success the last four or five years,” Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter said of the Lady Vikings’ second-half turnaround.

“They’re able to take it to another notch and make adjustments. Tonight, we didn’t do that. We could see them next week, and we’ll make the adjustments.

“The disappointing thing to us was that it was a tale of two halves. The execution followed our mentality. We got too passive, we didn’t see our huddles on the floor, we didn’t make adjustments, we didn’t move on from mistakes. Those are all things that make us who we are.

“We weren’t perfect in the first half by any means, but we executed, because we kept staying in the moment. We kept taking it one possession at a time. We were together in everything we did, and that’s who we are.”

Had the Lady Warriors done those things in the second half, it might have been a happier bus ride back to the northern part of the county.

Carpenter wasn’t surprised his team had Valley on the ropes in the first half, and he expects that out of his players.

That being said, a sectional matchup next week could be interesting.

“I expect that. I’m gonna be honest, and that’s not a sense of cockiness or anything like that, but I know who we are and I know what we’re capable of doing,” said Carpenter.

“Those girls set foot on the floor tonight expecting to win this game. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I wanna set foot on the practice floor tomorrow with the expectation that we will win our next game. And whoever we see in the first round (of the sectional), either Lakeland or Valley, we’re going to be ready for them. That needs to be our mentality.”

Aubrey Kuhn and Hannah-Marie Lamle scored 10 points each for Wawasee, with Kuhn adding five steals to her statline.

Kabrea Rostochak finished with five points and five rebounds.

Wawasee rounds out the regular season Thursday, with a Northern Lakes Conference game at Concord.

Valley travels to Three Rivers Conference foe Manchester Thursday in the regular season finale.
