Lady Squires Top TRC Rival Peru

January 22, 2018 at 5:20 p.m.

NORTH MANCHESTER – Other than a first-quarter defensive lapse that allowed Peru to take a one-point lead, Manchester coach Jacob Everett was pleased with the Lady Squires’ effort in a 61-46 Three Rivers Conference basketball win Saturday afternoon.

After playing a conference game Friday night in Rochester (a 40-27 loss), Manchester held a 9-2 lead three minutes into Saturday’s contest. The Lady Tigers’ Harmoni Stone and Kelsie Kelly combined to score 12 of Peru’s first 13 points and gathered five offensive rebounds over the last five minutes of the period to take a 15-14 lead.

Manchester tied it up before the buzzer, then went on an 11-2 run to open up the second period, taking advantage of multiple Peru turnovers and steadily pulling away.

“After the timeout at the quarter break, I had to get on ‘em and make sure our defensive effort was there,” Everett said. “We had to make sure we could buckle down on defense, get out in transition and score, which we had difficulty doing (Friday) night.

“We shot 50 percent on our twos, and against Rochester we shot 20 percent overall. So that’s a big improvement for us. Getting the ball in the basket was huge for us. We moved the ball efficiently against their zone, and we had girls step up and knock down shots. It was a good day all around, and I was happy with the way they responded after I got on them a little bit.”

Manchester was in the disposition of needing to play a pair of games in less than 14 hours after the game with Peru was postponed on Jan. 10. But Everett wasn’t complaining, saying it was good to get used to situations similar to what the Lady Squires, and anyone else, would encounter in postseason play.

“If you want to go (deep) in to the tournament, and if you want to play for a sectional title, you have to play back-to-back. You have to play Friday-Saturday,” he said. “You have to go home, rest up, take care of your body and you have to be ready to go.”

Kennedy Fierstos had 15 points and Sydney Day added 14 for Manchester, which had nine players find the hoop. Stone finished with a game-high 16 points and Kelley had 15 for Peru.

In the junior varsity game, Manchester’s Gabbie Brewer and Ranissa Shambarger had seven points each, with Mackenzie Day and Kennidy Lauer adding six points each in the Lady Squires’ 44-14 win over Peru.

The Lady Squires (11-10 overall) will host 3A No. 7 Tippecanoe Valley in their regular season finale Thursday. At stake is a share of second place in the conference. Both teams will enter the game 6-2 in the TRC, and the winner will share second place with the loser of Thursday’s Rochester at Northfield game.

Manchester has lost five straight to the Lady Vikings, and in the last three years with Everett as coach, the closest the Lady Squires have been is 27 points (69-42 on Jan. 28, 2016.)

Everett knows his players have their work cut out for them.

“It’s going to be a matter of ‘how well can we defend? How well can we take away some of their primary options? Can we keep them close to our defensive average?’” he said.

“We were a little bit over our defensive average (Saturday). We’ll need to lock down on defense, move the ball quick and make sure we don’t turn it over against their defensive pressure. We’ll have to practice that in the couple of days we have available to us.”
