No. 4 Homestead Beats Buzzer, Warsaw

January 17, 2018 at 4:54 p.m.

The Warsaw Lady Tigers lost their non-conference clash with Class 4A No. 4 Homestead Tuesday night, but that didn't stop Lenny Krebs from heaping praise on his players.

After clawing their way back into the game and putting themselves in position to win, they deserved it.

A high school girls basketball game that was a rout early ended up being an overtime thriller, one the defending state champion Lady Spartans won 48-47 when 6-foot sophomore Sydney Graber hit a well-defended three-pointer at the buzzer.

Graber's game-winner came after Warsaw sophomore Kaylee Patton hit a trey with 10 seconds left, giving the Lady Tigers their only lead of the game after they trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter.

“Just to put ourselves in the position we were in, I'm proud of them,” Krebs said of his players. “How many teams can fall behind 12-0 to Homestead and claw their way back? They're few and far between.

“I'm just proud of the girls, to have an opportunity to experience those emotions of the last part of the game was special.

“Graber hit a tough shot. We had a defender right there in her face. We didn't have a defensive break down, she just hit a tough shot, it wasn't like we gave up a layup. Unfortunately, in the game of basketball that happens.”

Graber finished the game 4 of 10 from the field, with all of her made shots coming from the arc, en route to 12 points. Junior Sylar Starks made a trio of three-pointers and led Homestead with a game-high 17 points.

The Lady Spartans, who improved to 17-3, scored the game's first 12 points and led 18-4 at one point in the first quarter.

Warsaw, now 12-8 on the season, trailed 20-13 after one quarter of play, 32-18 at halftime and 38-31 heading into the final frame.

Opening the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, the Lady Tigers tied the game for the first time at 38 when Patton converted a pair of free throws with 4:07 remaining in regulation.

The teams traded baskets from there, and the game went to overtime knotted at 42.

Graber scored all six of Homestead's points in the four-minute extra session. She hit a three-pointer with 2:26 on the clock to put Homestead up 45-42.

Warsaw junior Maddie Ryman converted a pair of charity tosses with 1:00 left to cut the deficit to one, 45-44, and Patton brought the crowd to its feet after giving the Lady Tigers the lead.

Warsaw’s excitement quickly turned to heartbreak, however, when Graber’s three-pointer swished through the net.

“In that situation, we defended well. Looking back, maybe we make her put it on the floor, make her do something else,” Krebs said of Graber’s shot.

“Just to be in that situation ... up two against the No. 4 team in the state. Yeah, it goes in the loss column, but with the experience we had at Goshen Saturday and the roller coaster of emotions there, the girls would tell you we were very mentally stable tonight compared to Saturday. I’m proud of the girls and how they came together.”

The Lady Tigers lost 39-26 at Goshen Saturday in Krebs’ return to the Maple City, where he coached the last 14 season before coming to Warsaw.

Patton and Ryman scored 12 points each in the loss, while senior Emma Bohnenkamper tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Brielle Harrison grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

Warsaw has two games remaining before the state tournament.

The Lady Tigers will host NLC foe Concord Saturday, and then entertain conference rival NorthWood on Jan. 25.

Homestead won Tuesday evening’s JV contest 33-32. Kensie Ryman led Warsaw with 17 points.

The Lady Spartans won the freshman matchup 30-21.
