Morris scored five of the Lady Trojans’ first seven points, Wanemacher hit a trio of three-pointers and Sechrist scored all seven of her points in the middle two quarters as Triton pulled away from Winamac in a 50-34 Hoosier North Athletic Conference win Tuesday night.
The game was played at Triton Elementary School due to a water line breakage earlier this week that rendered the Trojan Trench floor unplayable.
“They all went through elementary school here, and we also played our last summer league game here,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said. “I told them ‘it’s fitting that you play your last game here, where you started off.’ It worked out for them very well.”
After trailing 10-7 late in the first quarter, Triton went on an 18-2 run spurred by a suffocating defense that forced six Lady Warrior turnovers during that stretch.
Wanemacher scored 11 points and sophomore Whytnie Miller added six during the run. Miller finished with 14 points, including hitting 10 free throws in a row, and Wanemacher had 13 in the game.
“In the first quarter we kept pace. We did what we needed to do, and we learned what we needed to do a little bit better defensively,” Heckaman said. “In the second quarter we found the open shooters, we made the extra passes, made the extra plays and we took off. I joked with them at halftime ‘maybe we should have played all our home games here, because that’s about as many points as we’ve scored all year.’
“Winamac’s a good team. I think we caught them off guard a little bit when we went to our 1-3-1. We had some length with Nichole, we have Whytnie’s quickness, Hannah did a great job of getting from side-to-side, even though she hurt her ankle the other day, and Charlotte didn’t let anything happen in the middle.
“When we get all that working well it can be a good defense, and the girls played it to perfection in the second and third quarters.”
By the end of the third quarter the Triton lead ballooned to 43-20 and the Lady Trojans focused on burning off the clock the rest of the way.
The victory left the Lady Trojans in third place in the conference at 4-1, and improved them to 8-10 overall. Heckaman said the victory helped set up the remainder of the season for his team.
“We talked about in the locker room afterward that this is just one more step in what we want to try to accomplish,” he said. “If we keep taking it one game at a time and make sure we prepare what we can take care of, we can have a chance to win the conference, then we’ll see what happens in the Bi-County (tournament beginning Tuesday) and then the sectional.”
In junior varsity play, Abbey Viers scored six points and Emma Hepler five for Triton in its 35-20 loss to the Lady Warriors.
Next up for Triton is a conference game at Culver Community Friday night.
