AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley dominated the middle two quarters Thursday evening, but Northfield got off to a good start and had an even greater finish to beat the Class 3A No. 4 Lady Vikings 53-52 in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball action.

With the one-point loss, Valley’s 32-game conference win streak came to an end, as did the team’s 11-game streak this season.

The host Lady Vikings hadn’t lost a TRC game since a 63-53 setback to Rochester on Jan. 18, 2014.

Valley hadn’t lost a game this season since a 42-32 loss to Warsaw on Nov. 17.

Valley is now 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the TRC standings, while Northfield improved to 11-5 and 5-1.

Manchester is the only team unbeaten in TRC play at 4-0.

The Lady Norsemen led 16-8 after one quarter of play, but Valley – despite playing without starter Olivia Trippiedi – outscored Northfield 32-16 in the second and third quarters.

Northfield outscored Valley 21-12 in the final frame, and secured the streak-ending victory when freshman Addi Baker hit the second of two free throw attempts with just under two seconds remaining.

Sophie Bussard led Valley with 17 points and seven assists, while Emily Peterson and Addy Miller scored 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Baker led Northfield with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Ariel Dale chipped in with 15 points.

The Lady Vikings are in action again Tuesday when they travel to Nappanee to play potential sectional opponent NorthWood.
