Wawasee Tops T. Valley In Regular Season Finale

SYRACUSE – “We’re getting the most out of guys at the end of the year.”

Wawasee High School boys basketball coach Jon Everingham and his staff doled out the job assignments Friday and their players filled them effectively, beating the visiting Tippecanoe Valley Vikings 51-41 in the regular season finale for both teams.

“It’s understanding your role and doing your job,” said Everingham. “Team basketball is really what we’ve been preaching over the last five or six games. It’s not any one player that carried us tonight. We had guys like Bennett Hoffer and Ryan Edington come off the bench and get big minutes and make big shots. Trevon (Coleman) forced them to stay in a zone instead of going back to their man-to-man.”

Everingham noted that the Warriors (6-16) finished with 14 assists on 19 made field goals.

“That’s good for us,” said Everingham, who saw his team snap a three-game losing streak. “It means we’re sharing the ball and we’re really trusting our teammates.

“Jairus (Boyer) did a real nice job in the center of that zone, really breaking them down. That’s really where the game turned in that second quarter.”

Edington (12 points), Jacob Hand (10), Coleman (8), Hoffert (6), Aaron Evans (6) and Cayden Wegener (6) all contributed to the Wawasee attack. Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter and the score at the Hardwood Teepee was tied at 9-all at the end of the opening period.

With a Hoffert 3-pointer, Edington four-point play (3-pointer and free throw) and Boyer basket, Wawasee went on a 9-0 run to open up an 18-9 gap in the first three minutes of the second quarter.

Tippecanoe Valley then knocked the advantage down to four a few times and trailed 24-16 at halftime.

With Hand (6) and Edington (5) netting all but two of Wawasee’s points, the Warriors led by as many as 14 in the third quarter at 37-24. The hosts never let the Vikings (5-16) get closer than 10 in the fourth quarter. Wegener netted six of his team’s 14 fourth-quarter points.

“We just dug ourselves a hole,” said Valley coach Chad Patrick.

The Vikings got 10 points from Parkur Dalrymple and nine each from Alex Morrison, Cameron Parker (all in the fourth quarter) and Tanner Trippiedi (seven in the third quarter).

Next up for Wawasee and Valley are games in the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional — 6 p.m. Tuesday against Lakeland for the Warriors, and 7:30 p.m. Friday against Tuesday’s NorthWood vs. Fairfield winner for the Vikings.

“We’ve gotten better with things at the end of the year,” said Patrick. “We can be a hard out (in the sectional). I really believe we can make some noise.”

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
