The final margin was the biggest margin of victory in the series, which has featured four games. The Greyhounds won the previous three meetings by a total of 10 points.
Carmel (14-7) has a roster that included six players that are 6-foo-4 or taller and two of them started.
By comparison, the Tiger (11-10) have just three players 6-4 or taller.
The biggest player in the game for Carmel was 6-10 junior John Michael Mulloy, who was a menace for Warsaw. He scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The Butler University commit toed the free throw line 16 times in the game and made 15 of the shot attempts, while shooting 4 of 6 from the floor.
“He was the difference in the game,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. “He was the best player in the game by being more physical and more aggressive.”
Carmel was coming off a tough loss to Warren Central the night before. The Greyhounds lost to the undefeated No. 1 team in Class 4A by one point and the Tigers were hoping to catch them off guard and steal a victory.
Warsaw wanted to send the seniors off with a win on senior night. Ogle started five seniors who have combined for 21 starts this year and were able to keep pace with the Greyhounds. The Tigers were down 5-0 when senior Dane Stookey drilled a three-pointer and senior Jack Rhodes made a basket to even the score.
After those few minutes, the regular starters came back in for the Tigers and hit the floor cold. Carmel went on a 13-2 run to end the quarter and stretched the lead to 18-7. Warsaw shot 3 of 12 in the quarter.
“It’s tough emotionally in that dynamic to have a completely different group start and then bring in a different group,” said Ogle. “It just didn’t go well for us.”
The Tigers played the next two quarters close and bridged the gap some, ending the third quarter down 37-30. Warsaw improved its shooting and had a clip of 41 percent from the floor.
Rebounding was a theme all game had a huge advantage in the first three quarters. The Greyhounds had 21 boards and the Tigers had 10 through 24 minutes of play, with Carmel having nine offensive rebounds.
The Greyhounds were more physical and used their height to capture those chances after missed shots and kept that momentum going in the fourth stanza.
It took Warsaw over two and half minutes to score in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers used a 6-2 run to shrink the deficit to 44-38. Sophomore Brian Elliott brought the Tigers within five after a made triple, but the hosts were unable to get any closer.
Elliott tallied three baskets from long range in the quarter and finished the game with a team-high 15 points on 6-of 10-shooting. Junior Nolan Groninger scored 11 points and led the team with three rebounds.
Warsaw will conclude regular season play at Carroll on Friday. Varsity tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m in Fort Wayne.
