In a 49-29 win over Triton in high school boys basketball action, the host Vikings had one of their better shooting performances of the season, making more than 50 percent of their attempts.
Valley has come around as far as shooting, but coach Chad Patrick believes his team should have been performing like that all season.
“We’ve been practicing since November and now they’re getting to where they should be when they start the season,” said Patrick. “Still have to work at this game in the offseason to be good at it.”
It was a different story for the Trojans (6-12), who shot just under 25 percent for the game. Triton missed 11 shots in the opening stanza, but was still able to keep the game tied after the first eight minutes.
The Trojans’ woes continued into the next period. They scored three points off a triple from sophomore Quentin Thornburg and went cold thereafter.
Confidence was an issue for Triton, while the Vikings (5-16) showcased it almost effortlessly.
“The kids are unsure of themselves and each other right now,” said Triton head coach Jason Groves. “It snowboarded tonight and got contagious. Valley was way more aggressive tonight.”
Valley led 20-11 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Trojans got a three-pointer from sophomore Tyler Heckaman in the first 15 seconds of action, but went cold for the next four minutes. Valley was able to tally 10 points in that time span. By the end of the third, the lead had grown to 39-21.
In the fourth quarter, the Vikings stayed on the gas and led by as many as 25, securing the win on senior night.
Valley has two seniors on the roster. Dakota Parker and foreign exchange student Matheus Bagarollo, who made his first start of the season. Parker tallied seven points in the final home game of his prep career.
Junior Wes Melanson has been challenged throughout the season by head coach Chad Patrick on being a leader for the team.
“We’ve been trying to get him to calm down and let the game come to him.” Patrick said of Melanson. “He was acting like a coach on the floor and that’s exactly what we needed.”
Melanson scored a game-high 12 points and secured four rebounds.
Senior Ross Johnson scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards for Triton. Thornburg finished with five points and three rebounds.
The Trojans will play at John Glen tonight in a nonconference clash starting at 7:30 p.m. Valley will take a short break and play again on Wednesday at Maconaquah.
