Valley Vikings Fall To NorthWood Panthers

February 14, 2018 at 5:47 p.m.

AKRON – In a potential sectional preview, Tippecanoe Valley lost 53-37 to NorthWood Tuesday in nonconference boys basketball action.

The Vikings (4-15) had trouble finding the bottom of the net from long range throughout the game. Hitting 6 of 25 shots from three-point distance during the contest, Valley was 1 of 15 at one point.

“That was a rough shooting night for us; hard to win many games when you shoot like that,” said Tippecanoe Valley coach Chad Patrick. “They weren’t bad shots; we just couldn’t knock them down.”

The Vikings had the advantage late in the first quarter, holding an 12-11 lead with just over a minute remaining in the period. Sophomore Jace Potter tallied seven of those points for Valley, making a strong layup in the paint, leading to a foul and sinking the free throw. The Panthers (13-5) went on a short run and scored the quarter’s next seven points to secure an 18-12 led heading into the next stanza.

The shooting woes continued for the Vikings in the next eight minutes, as they scored just eight points in the second quarter.

After halftime, both teams started out slow in the third period, nearly playing three minutes of action before someone scored.  The Vikings played stellar defense during that stretch, forcing NorthWood to not score on three straight possessions.

Sophomore Tanner Trippiedi nailed a triple to open up the scoring in the second half for Valley. Senior Brad Delio answered just 15 seconds after that for the Panthers with a basket from behind the arc.  On the Vikings’ next possession, Trippiedi hit another triple to bring the deficit to 33-22.

NorthWood went on a scoring run and tallied nine straight points and ended the third quarter up 44-25. Valley was unable to make a large run in the fourth.

The Panthers had three players score in double figures, showing the depth they have. Delio led with 19 points, senior Caleb Lung tallied 15 and junior Kaden Gongwer had 10.

“Doesnt matter if they graduate one or 12 players, they just reload,” Patrick said of the Panthers. “We will get this program back to where it used to be and where we had that.”

NorthWood came into the game having played two games in three days, with Valley hoping to catch them off guard and to potentially steal a win.

Valley shot much better in the second half, making 42 percent of its shots, compared to 30 percent in the first half.

Trippiedi knocked down five three-pointers and led Valley with 17 points. Potter netted seven points and had three rebounds.

The Vikings look to bounce back when they play Triton on Friday. The Vikings will honor their lone senior, Dakota Parker. Varsity tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
