Winona Lake Man Charged In Trailer Thefts

A Winona Lake man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly helping steal trailers from a local storage unit and then selling the trailers to unsuspecting victims.

Charles Laustin Kreider, 28, of 1202 Wooster Road, Lot 60, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 10:06 p.m. Tuesday on two counts of failure to appear, auto theft, criminal mischief and on a warrant in a civil matter. His preliminary bond was set at $6,117.

Court documents filed Thursday list the counts against him as two counts of burglary, level 5 felonies; and two counts of auto theft, level 6 felonies.

On Jan. 8, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department officer Don McCune spoke with a man who said that on Jan. 2 an unknown person entered the fenced-in area at Alpine West storage in Warsaw, cut the wires and stole seven closed circuit video cameras. The cameras were valued at $1,000.

On Jan. 28, KCSD officer Christopher Anderson spoke with another man who said his utility trailer was stolen from the storage lot. The cargo trailer contained a riding mower, transmission and other miscellaneous items. Officers reviewed a surveillance video and discovered the trailer was stolen Jan. 2.

On Jan. 28, Anderson spoke with a third man who said his cargo trailer was stolen from the storage area at Alpine West. He said the trailer contained ratchet straps and a tire. Officers determined the trailer was stolen Jan. 8.

Officers found the third man’s trailer at a fourth man’s residence in Tippecanoe. The fourth man provided a bill of sale for the trailer from Kreider.

KCSD officer Shane Bucher spoke with Kreider, who admitted he and a woman went to the storage facility and stole the third man’s cargo trailer and sold it to the fourth man.
