Woman Arrested After Accident, Brief Chase

A Mentone woman was arrested Wednesday evening after failing to stop for an accident and then leading police on a short chase.
Tabitha S. Syndram, 47, of 203 N. Franklin St., Mentone, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County?Jail at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday for resisting law enforcement with the use of a vehicle and failure to stop after an accident. Her preliminary bond was set at $5,250.
According to a Warsaw Police Department accident report, Kelsey L. Wertenberger, 25, Claypool, was driving her car north on Meijer Drive and was stopped at a red traffic light while waiting to turn left to head west on U.S. 30.
Syndram, in her SUV, drove up behind her at a rapid pace and rear-ended Wertenberger’s car. Wertenberger told police she got out of her car and tried to speak with the driver of the SUV, later identified as Syndram, but Syndram would not roll down her window and motioned for Wertenberger to move away.

Wertenberger started to call Central Dispatch when the SUV backed up and went around Wertenberger’s car and then waited at the red traffic light.
Winona Lake Police officer Joe Bumbaugh was off duty and behind Wertenberger in a personal vehicle. Bumbaugh asked Wertenberger if the SUV had just hit her and she said it had.
Bumbaugh identified himself to Syndram and tried to stop her, but she drove away and headed west on U.S. 30.
Bumbaugh followed Syndram’s SUV and contacted dispatch. Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department units attempted to stop the vehicle, but Syndram continued driving until she was finally stopped near The Bowling Alley on North Detroit Street.
While no injuries were reported, Wertenberger’s car had scratches, dents and red paint transfer on the rear from the front of Syndram’s SUV.
