Syracuse Teen Faces Arson Charge

Travys Lee Hise, 19, of 10018 N. Mulberry Drive, Syracuse, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:22 p.m. Friday for arson, burglary and theft. His preliminary bond was set at $10,250.
Court documents filed Monday list the counts against Hise as burglary, a level 4 felony; arson, a level 4 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor. It lists his bond as $20,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
On Jan. 30, Turkey Creek Fire Department responded to a house fire belonging to Steven Kelly, according to court documents.
A news release issued by the fire department after the fire gave the address as 10322 N. Grand Blvd., Syracuse, and said it responded to the call at about 1:50 p.m. Jan. 30. The release also stated the home was owned by KRE Assets LLC, 1 Industrial Drive, Cromwell. The fire territory determined the house was a total loss, with damage estimated at over $90,000.
According to court documents, the fire department determined the house fire had been intentionally set and requested the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigate.
KCSD officer Kevin Gelbaugh spoke with construction workers who said they saw two men walking toward the residence shortly before the fire. Gelbaugh found the two men walking westbound on East Morrison Island Road near the house fire. He identified one man as Hise. Court documents did not identity the other man.
Hise and the other man matched the description that the construction workers had provided.
Hise told Gelbaugh that he and the other man broke into the residence. Hise said the other man used a red lighter found inside the residence to set items on fire. Court documents state Hise admitted to vandalizing the residence. He also said the two lighters used at the house were at his house.
Gelbaugh went to Hise’s residence and obtained the two lighters that Hise said were used to set the house on fire.
