WINONA LAKE – In yet another classic between men's basketball rivals Grace College and Bethel College, the Lancers came up short on Saturday, falling 77-75 to the 13th-ranked Pilots.

Grace had two shots to tie the game in the final seconds but misfired on both attempts at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The Lancers (10-16, 3-11 Crossroads League) were driven in large part by Matt Jennings and Jaret Sons, who each finished with 21 points.

Sons produced 19 points in a second-half comeback, burying five three-pointers to fuel Grace's offense. His 21 points were a career-high total.

Saturday's game was hotly contested from tipoff to final buzzer. The No. 13 Pilots (19-7, 8-6 CL) led for most of the first half, although the score was close throughout the opening 20 minutes.

Bethel built its largest lead of the half at 27-19. Jennings responded with a three-pointer, and Haden Deaton hit two foul shots to bridge the gap. Cody Holmes also scored two late baskets to provide a spark off the bench.

Jennings beat the buzzer at halftime with a jumper as Bethel led 40-36. The teams shot almost identical from the floor, except Grace was only 2 of 11 from beyond the arc and 4 of 9 from the free throw line.

Key big man Logan Godfrey picked up his third foul late in the first half, which proved to be harmful later in the game.

Grace scored the first four points of the second half to tie the score, but the Pilots slowly built up a cushion. Godfrey was whistled for his fourth foul with 9:58 remaining in the game, and he did not return for the rest of the contest.

The Pilots held a 64-53 lead with 6:59 to play, but Grace had an answer with its long-range shooting.

Sons hit a triple followed by a pair of free throws to start Grace's rally. Just over a minute later, Sons rose up for yet another trey to tie the score at 65-65 with 4:23 remaining.

Bethel scored on its next three possessions, but Stephen Halstead and Sons reacted with back-to-back triples to tie the score at 71-71. Sons tied the game yet again at 73 with a pair of free throws.

The Pilots pulled ahead with two free throws in the final minute, but Jennings hit a pair of clutch foul shots of his own with 31 seconds on the clock.

Bethel patiently wound down the clock, and Gage Ott hit the eventual game winner in the paint with under 10 seconds to play.

Grace set up a potential game-tying play after a timeout, but Jennings's shot under contact was just off the mark, and Halstead's last-second shot was short.

Jennings topped 20 points for the fourth time in his freshman season, shooting 7 of 11 from the floor to go along with two assists.

Sons was 5 of 10 from the arc en route to his 21 point-performance, adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Deaton scored eight points with three assists, Halstead scored seven points, and Godfrey finished with six points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Grace shot 46 percent from the floor compared to 51 percent for Bethel. The Lancers were 63 percent from the free throw line, but they committed just 10 turnovers.

The Lancers will aim to rebound on Tuesday, hosting Marian at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center at 7 p.m.

Gage Ott was 11 of 15 from the field and led Bethel with a game-high 28 points, while Trey’von Covington and Paul Forman scored 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Former Triton High School standout Tanner Shepherd scored two points for the Pilots.
