Lady Tigers Fall In Sectional Semifinal

February 3, 2018 at 7:25 a.m.

DUNLAP – Coach Lenny Krebs is excited for what the future holds for the Warsaw Lady Tigers after his first season has concluded.

Despite losing 38-35 to Elkhart Memorial Friday night in the Class 4A Sectional 4 semifinals at Concord High School’s McCuen Gymnasium, Krebs has established a culture for the team.

Krebs took a squad with only three seniors and guided them to a 15-9 (5-2 NLC) record a season after graduating all five starters and six seniors in all from a 20-4 team.

“When we hang a banner, we’re going to look back at what they started,” said Krebs. “They’re the ones who started this process and established the culture.”

In the first quarter, the Lady Tigers climbed to a 10-6 lead, paced by senior Emma Bohnenkamper’s eight points in the period.

Warsaw struggled on offense in the second stanza, managing to score just three points, compared to Elkhart Memorial’s (14-9) 11 points. Senior Sierra Peete netted seven points for the Lady Chargers while shooting 50 percent.

In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers scored nine points, seven from junior Maddie Ryman, who scored a team high 16 points in the contest.

“She has come so far this year and has learned so much,” Krebs said. “She has shown a lot of growth, she has a lot of pressure with being the point guard.”

Heading into the fourth quarter, Warsaw was down 27-22 and was able to bridge the gap and make it 27-25 after a three-pointer from Ryman. Elkhart Memorial scored a quick basket to increase the lead and Warsaw countered on its end to keep the score a two-point game at 29-27.

The next possession for Elkhart Memorial saw the momentum shift from Warsaw to Elkhart Memorial.  Lady Charger senior Kambria Dale drilled a triple in the corner to make it 32-27. On the following possession, Ryman hit a three-pointer and kept the score close, but Elkhart Memorial hit another one from beyond the arc to make it 35-30, with two minutes remaining.

Bohnenkamper made a three to make it a four-point spread, her last basket in a Lady Tiger uniform. Warsaw was unable to make a comeback like they have a number of times this season.

Warsaw shot 32 percent from arc and 35 percent overall in the game.

“We had to do a better job at getting pressure on the inside of their zone.” said Krebs. We didn’t puncture their zone often tonight and we weren’t very aggressive in doing that.”

Sophomore Kaylee Patton finished the game with eight points for Warsaw and Bohnenkamper tallied five points.

Mya Reeves led the Crimson Chargers with 10 points, while Libby Lapczynski and Peete scored nine and eight, respectively.

Memorial plays crosstown rival Central, a 54-52 semifinal winner over Northridge, at 6 p.m. tonight in the title tilt.
