To say the least, Warsaw’s Northern Lakes Conference matchup with the Elkhart Memorial Crimson Chargers resembled an NBA three-point shooting contest.
Memorial senior Hank Smith had the hot hand, making 9 of 11 three-point attempts as he scored a game-high 31 points and led the hosts to a 63-50 victory that snapped the Tigers’ seven-game win streak and created a four-way tie atop the NLC standings.
Smith, whose nine treys set a new school record, was 7 of 7 from the field in the first half – including five treys – and finished the game 11 of 14 from the field overall.
As a team, Memorial was 24 of 34 overall (71 percent), 11 of 14 from the arc (79 percent), and 4 of 5 at the free throw line.
Smith’s shooting performance overshadowed a career-high 24 points from Warsaw sophomore Brian Elliott, who made seven treys in the second half and was 8 of 12 from the arc.
“Hank Smith was pretty efficient,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team fell to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the NLC. “He made some long threes where we couldn’t play defense any different than we did.
“He was 5 of 5 in the first half, and then he was 4 out of 6 in the second half. We were kind of hoping that he wouldn’t be able to continue that pace, but he did.
“We had too many possessions where we were throwing the ball willy nilly ... I mean, we had three turnovers right out of the gate where we just weren’t strong with the ball. We could have withstood it a little more had our defense on (Trey) Gallope been better.”
Gallope complimented Smith with an impressive all-around performance that included 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
“That’s pretty incredible,” Memorial coach Kyle Sears said of Gallope’s stat line. “He gives that to us most nights, and the thing that I’ve been impressed with is those six assists. He finds the right guy at the right time, which is very helpful, and he quietly goes for 15 (points). Then you add seven rebounds on top of it all.
“He and Hank continue to carry us. We’re going to need them the rest of the way as well.”
With one round of games remaining in the NLC, Warsaw, Memorial, Plymouth and Northridge are all tied at 4-2.
The Tigers host Plymouth on Feb. 9, while Northridge hosts Concord that day and Memorial travels to NorthWood.
Warsaw is in search of an unprecedented fourth straight NLC?title. The Tigers have won 25 of their last 27 conference games and could have clinched at least a share of the crown Thursday.
“If we beat Plymouth on Feb. 9 in the Tiger Den we are going to be Northern Lakes Conference champions, with somebody, I’m sure of that,” said Ogle, whose team had won 13 straight NLC?road games.
“I know we’re going to be NLC?champions if we win that game. The plan was to win out and not share it, but we weren’t good enough to win tonight. Shares don’t happen very often in the NLC, they hardly ever happen. At this point, I’d take a share.”
Memorial led 18-13 after one quarter of play, 35-24 at halftime and 46-33 heading into the final frame.
The Crimson Chargers built their lead to as many as 20 points, 55-35, but Warsaw closed the gap some late as Elliott was 4 of 4 from the arc in the fourth quarter.
“He did a nice job and was ready to shoot,” Ogle said of Elliott. “It was a good game for him shooting the ball.”
Senior Zach Riley tallied 10 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, while junior Nolan Groninger finished with six points and six assists.
Memorial topped the Tigers 43-40 in the JV game.
Keagan Larsh led Warsaw with 13 ponts, while Tedros Berelsman and Jaylen Coon scored nine and eight points, respectively.
