Elkhart Man Accused Of Swapping UPC Labels In Scheme To Get More Expensive Merchandise

December 27, 2018 at 7:06 p.m.

An Elkhart man was arrested this week after allegedly using a UPC label on a less-expensive hunting bow to “purchase” more expensive ones at a Warsaw store in August.

Kory John Jackson, 46, Elkhart, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 7:29 p.m. Wednesday for making a false sales document. His preliminary bond was set at $5,000 surety and $1,000 cash.

Court documents filed Oct. 4 list the charges against him as two counts of making a false sales document, level 6 felonies, and two counts of theft, Class A misdemeanors.

On Sept. 15, Warsaw Police officer Jeff Ticknor responded to a theft complaint at Walmart. He talked to the asset protection employee. She said that on Aug. 18 she saw a man – later identified as Jackson – enter Walmart, walk to the sporting goods department, remove the UPC label from a $49.97 bow and place it in his pocket. He then selected a $448 bow, took it to the self-checkout aisle, scanned the UPC label from the $49.97 bow and walked out of the store with the $448 bow.

Video surveillance dated Aug. 31 showed Jackson using the same maneuver  with a $318 bow and using the same UPC label he used on Aug. 18. Jackson then left the building with the bow, court documents state.
