Thanks To Goshert

A quick note of gratitude for outgoing Sheriff Rocky Goshert:  During his campaign for the Republican nomination this spring, Sheriff Goshert ran on, among other things, the implementation of a Jail Chemical Addiction Program in the Kosciusko County Jail, so that inmates could receive drug treatment while awaiting the disposition of their cases.  He may be one of the first politicians in history to keep his promises even after losing re-election.

The JCAP program is now up and running for female inmates, and the feedback I’ve received from participants has been extremely positive.  Two common themes I’ve heard from them: (1) that the counseling they’ve received is far more intensive than anything they’ve experienced elsewhere; and (2) that the counselors, the volunteers, and the jail staff working the program – including and especially Jail Commander Mike Mulligan – seem to genuinely care about their recovery and their well-being.  It’s too early to tell whether the program will be a success, and the difficult nature of the problem it’s seeking to address means that there will almost inevitably be a fair amount of failures.  But for taking steps to address the issue, and doing so in a professional and compassionate manner, Sheriff Goshert and his team should be rightly proud.

On a personal note, I would also like to thank Sheriff Goshert for his conduct during the campaign.  Rocky’s been a friend of my family for many years, and he never shied away from saying so, even when some of the more cautious political minds feared that association with the Rovenstine name would endanger his prospects with an electorate hungry for change.  That’s a sign of high integrity and a mark of true friendship.  I know I speak for the entire Rovenstine family when I say thank you.

I can also speak for the Rovenstines in congratulating Kyle Dukes on his victory in the primary and wishing him nothing but the best as he assumes leadership of the tremendous department we’ve known as a part of our family so many years.  Godspeed to Sheriff Dukes, and God bless all the men and women of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
