One of the men who robbed a man of $3,000 at gunpoint in December 2017 at the Time Out Inn was sentenced Thursday morning for aiding intimidation, a level 6 felony.

Kosciusko County Superior Court I Judge David Cates sentenced Cedric O. Gamble Jr., 30, of Fort Wayne, to one year in the custody of the Kosciusko County sheriff, but suspended the sentence for probation.

He will receive 23 days of actual jail time credit. He also must pay the standard fees and fines and go to the Bowen Center to be assessed for substance abuse issues at his own cost. Gamble must pay $300 to the county for his appointed legal counsel.

As part of his plea deal, two robbery charges against Gamble were dismissed. He pleaded guilty to the intimidation charge in November.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in December 2017, on Dec. 10, a Warsaw police officer responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Time Out Inn, West Lake Street, Warsaw. He spoke with a man who said he had been at the bar and had $3,000 in his possession. He went out to the parking lot to put a woman’s purse in a vehicle and several men followed him.

One of the men – later identified as Gamble – approached him and asked for a cigarette lighter. The victim gave Gamble a lighter and put the purse inside the vehicle. The victim then approached Gamble for his lighter and Gamble produced a semi-automatic handgun and placed it against the victim’s right temple, according to the court documents.

The victim asked Gamble if he was going to shoot him and he began to fight to get away. Two more men came to assist and the victim was punched in the head and believed he was hit in the right cheek with the handgun. The victim fell to the ground and covered up from being hit.

The subjects then stole his cell phone and wallet containing the $3,000. They then left in a minivan.

At Gamble’s sentencing Thursday, when Cates asked Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Brad Voelz if there were any more claims for restitution, Voelz said the prosecutor’s office attempted to contact the victim to see if he wanted to make a statement or request restitution, but they failed to hear from him. Voelz asked the court for additional 30 days to make contact with the victim. Cates denied the state’s motion because the victim already had over a year.

Karin A. McGrath, Gamble’s attorney, told Cates, “This is the best example in my recent experience of a pretty great guy hanging out with the wrong people.”

She said Gamble did not do what he originally was accused of doing, and that he would appreciate the opportunity to prove to Cates and the community he can stay out of trouble. She said his record has been spot free up until this point in his life.

Cates accepted Gamble’s plea agreement and told him, “Mr. Gamble, I do not need repeat customers. I hope not to see you again.”
