BOURBON – The Manchester Lady Squires used defense Wednesday night to overcome their shooting woes.

In a nonconference high school girls basketball game at Triton, the Lady Squires shot just 28.6 percent from the field, but beat the Lady Trojans 41-26.

Manchester was 12 of 42 from the field overall, 4 of 17 from the three-point arc, and 13 of 21 at the charity stripe.

The Lady Squires improved to 8-5 overall and won for the fifth time in their last six games because they held the hosts to 28.1 percent from the field.

The Lady Trojans, who scored just 14 points in the first three quarters, were 9 of 32 overall, 0 of 9 from the arc, and 8 of 14 at the charity stripe.

Triton fell to 4-11 on the season.

“Our defensive effort and execution made up for a less-than-ideal shooting night for us tonight,” said Manchester coach Jacob Everett, a Triton High School graduate and standout on the Trojans’ boys basketball state championship team in 2008.

“I thought we played hard and executed well in the second half against a well-prepared Triton team. We look foward to some rest before gearing up for the county tourney.”

The Lady Squires will play Southwood at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 in the first round of the annual Wabash County Tournament.

The Lady Trojans will be in action again Saturday when they host Rochester.

In Wednesday’s game, Manchester led 5-1 after one quarter of play, 17-6 at halftime and 30-14 heading into the final frame.

Kennedy Fierstos paced the Lady Squires with a game-high 15 points, while Eva Bazzoni and Kennidy Lauer chipped in with eight points each, and Kiera Hatfield finished with five points.

For Triton, Alyxa Viers scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jaela Faulkner and Lexia Hostrawser tallied four points each, and Emma Hepler and Chelsea Johnson rounded out the Lady Trojans’ output with two points each.

Triton won the JV game 31-29 in overtime.
