AKRON – In just eight games, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings have matched their win total of last season.

Valley, 5-18 a year ago in Chad Patrick’s first season as head coach, improved to 5-3 Tuesday evening with a 62-36 nonconference high school boys basketball win over the visiting Culver Community Cavaliers.

The Vikings held a 12-point lead before the first quarter was over and never looked back, as they won their third straight game and for the fourth time in five games.

Culver made just 33 percent of its field goal attempts and fell to 1-7 on the season.

Valley led 20-12 after one quarter of play, 33-19 at halftime and 45-26 heading into the final frame.

Cameron Parker led Valley with a game-high 16 points to go with four rebounds.

Parkur Dalrymple, who hit the game-winning three-pointer in Valley’s 46-45 win over rival Whitko Friday night, chipped in with 13 points, three steals and a rebound.

Jace Potter turned in a big performance that included 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and a pair of steals.

Patrick said he wants to see that kind of performance out of Potter more often.

“If he goes hard and plays well, we’re a lot better basketball team,” Patrick said of Potter during a post-game radio interview.

“He could do that every night. He played really well tonight. He got tired ... he has issues with his knee. I love that kid, I just wish he played hard all the time because he could dominate. He has no clue how good he could be, and we tell him all the time. I got on him in practice and I said ‘listen, I’ve yelled at you, I’ve been nice to you, I’ve babied you, I’ve done everything, and I’m done. If you don’t play hard you’re not gonna play.

“We need him to be great, and tonight he took a step closer to that.”

Potter finished the game 6 of 8 from the field.

Tanner Trippiedi overcame a rough shooting night to contribute eight points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Alex Craft and Jalen Shepherd scored four points each in the win, while Ross O’Connor and Dwight Conley rounded out Valley’s scoring with three and two points, respectively.

Valley won big despite shooting 40 percent from the field.

The Vikings’ biggest struggle was from the arc, where they made four of their first five attempts, but missed their final 18.

“We’re still struggling shooting,” said Patrick. “We work on it, but I don’t care how much you do in practice, it’s only two hours and you’ve got to get other things in. Each kid may get 50 to 100 shots, and that’s if we do a couple good shooting drills.

“We just had another conversation about that. If you want to be a good shooter you have to shoot 300, 400, 500 shots a day, so you have to find 15, 20 minutes, a half hour a day, and most of these guys when practice is over they can’t get out of here fast enough. That’s fine, but you’re just not gonna shoot it well when you do that. The good ones stay and shoot. The great ones find a lot of time to shoot.

“When you’re struggling, you gotta get your butt in the gym and fix it, and we just don’t have kids doing that. I may not make it an option. If they’re not gonna do it on their own, we’ll just go back to 2-1/2 hour practices and the last half hour will be shooting. There’s ways to fix it, I just was kind of hoping they’d do that on their own.”

Tucker Fisher led Culver with 10 points, Owen Valiquet and Colin O’Dell chipped in with nine points each.

Valley won the JV game 60-27.

The Vikings travel to LaVille Friday for the WHME?Ch. 46 Game of the Week.
