Depth An Advantage As Tigers Topple Triton

Depth was the decider Wednesday.

The Warsaw and Triton wrestling teams faced off in the Tiger Den, with the Tigers winning in part because they had a more complete lineup than the Trojans.

“(The Trojans) are down in numbers, for whatever reason, and that was probably the difference tonight,” said Warsaw coach Kris Hueber.

The Tigers (11-7) won four matches by forfeit, while the Trojans won one by forfeit.

They were 4-4 in live matches, and Triton held a 21-15 lead before Warsaw’s Jacob Bass (145 pounds) and Alex Jordan (152 pounds) won by forfeit for the 27-21 advantage.

Not wanting to waste a top wrestler, Hueber moved Jose Grimmett up from 152 to 160.

“He’s a guy we count on every meet,” Hueber said.

Grimmett won by fall in 32 seconds, as did Brandon Estepp, who moved up to 170 for the Tigers.

Suddenly, a six-point deficit became an 18-point advantage.

Triton’s James Snyder earned the Trojans’ final victory of the night when he pinned his opponent in just more than a minute.

Warsaw closed out the match with a win by forfeit at 195.

“It is what it is,” said Triton coach Matthew Arvesen. “We have some forfeits this year. We’ve used that against others in the past to get our points as well.”

Despite the loss, Arvesen was pleased with his team’s effort.

He noted the Trojans are playing catch-up since having wrestlers start late due to Triton’s football success.

Ironically, it was four Triton football players who picked up wins.

In addition to Snyder, Billy Smith won by fall in 36 seconds in the 285-pound match.

Triton’s Nate Riggins picked up a pin in 1:25 at 126, while Connor Pitney earned a 6-2 decision at 138.

“I hope the kids took a chapter watching Connor Pitney tonight, and burying his spiral for the better part of four minutes into the match,” Arvesen said. “The kids are doing things we’re wanting them to do. It’s nice to see the kids try the moves we’re wanting them to do in practice.”

Warsaw’s Andrew Ross won by fall in 22 seconds at 120, while Brock Hogenson overcame an early deficit to win 11-5 at 132.

Hueber said Hogenson’s win was a product of hard work in the offseason and at practice, and was pleased with his 132-pounder.

“We knew that might be a swing match for us, and we were happy with Brock,” Hueber said.

Despite the win, Hueber saw stagnancy in his team.

“From a mindset perspective, we need to continue to grow,” he said. “I feel like we’re happy with the progress that we’re making, but we’re nowhere near where we need to be.”
