SYRACUSE – Martha L. “Marty” Scearce, 87, of Syracuse, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, at Towne House Retirement Community in Fort Wayne.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1931, in Syracuse, to Leo Burtram “Burt” and Mary H. “Hazel” Dewart Whitehead. She graduated in 1948 from Syracuse High School and in 1952 from Indiana University in Bloomington.

She was married on June 21, 1952, in Syracuse (Dewart Lake), to Donald G. “Don” Scearce, who preceded her on Dec. 2, 2010.

She grew up in Syracuse and lived in Fort Wayne for 12 years and Warsaw for 30 years before moving back to Syracuse for retirement.

She was the co-owner and operator of Scearce & Associates in Warsaw as office manager for 10 years.

She was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church and PEO Sisterhood – Chapter E.J. She was an avid bridge player, reader and genealogist.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan (Stanford) Rice of Fort Wayne; a son, Gary (Vickie) Scearce of Crown Point; five grandchildren: Matthew and Katie Scearce, and Alexandra, William and Michael Rice; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Lyle Whitehead.

Cremation will take place at Cremation Services of Kosciusko County, Warsaw.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the United Methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Road, North Webster.

Private family burial will take place in the Salem Cemetery near Milford at a later date.
